Updates to Salewa Wildfire GTX
- The revamped Wildfire GTX from Salewa offers enhanced performance through its updated features. Formerly equipped with a Vibram rubber outsole, this current version comes with a Pomoca Speed Mtn sole. It is made of a unique compound and lug pattern that gives optimal rock and ground adherence.
- Previously employing the brand-owned MFF+ insole, the Wildfire GTX midsole is now paired with an Ortholite footbed. This combination provides all-day comfort and helps reduce fatigue.
- The shoe still carries a durable mesh upper. It is complemented by Salewa-owned features, such as the EXA Shell and 3F and Climbing Lacing systems. The product designers borrowed the Gore-Tex technology for a breathable and waterproof adventure.
Size and fit
This Salewa approach shoe caters to men and women. It is manufactured in a range of whole and half sizes. The Wildfire GTX’s width is medium to slightly narrow, and it runs true to size. Thanks to the Climbing Lacing system feature, users are allowed to fine-tune the fit.
Salewa men’s and women’s Wildfire GTX employ a Pomoca Speed Mtn outsole. This material is known for its stickiness, whether it is on wet or dry granite. The climbing zone at the toe renders edging performance. The pronounced lugs offer enhanced traction, especially over soft surfaces.
A breathable Ortholite footbed sits atop the Wildfire GTX’s EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) midsole. Thanks to its open-cell PU structure, it is able to provide breathability and manage moisture. The air is permitted to circulate in and around the foam, keeping a cool environment. Additionally, with its moisture management system, it is able to move away sweat from the foot, maintaining a dry yet comfy feel. Ortholite foams are lightweight and are eco-friendly too.
This Salewa approach shoe has a predominantly mesh upper that renders lightweight comfort. The brand’s designers added the EXA Shell technology injected cage. It is a plastic grip placed on the top of the mesh for enhanced protection and abrasion resistance. This feature also helps maintain the shoe’s flexibility. The rubber in the toe area adds protection against bumps and knocks.
The shoe comes with a Gore-Tex Extended Comfort laminate. It is designed to provide an optimal level of breathability, especially during active use. It also aims to promote comfort in both indoor and outdoor environments.
With the brand’s very own 3F System, the instep is connected to the sole and heel, maximizing support and flexibility. Additionally, the Climbing Lacing system allows management of fit. A loop at the back of the shoe allows easy on and off
Salewa Wildfire GTX vs. Wildfire Edge
These Salewa approach shoes come with a lot of similarities and differences. The Wildfire Edge, as the brand advertises, can be adapted from “hiking mode” to “climbing mode.” The Wildfire GTX, on the other hand, offers precision on technical approaches and climbs. Read on to find out more about their features.
Upper. The Wildfire Edge combines suede leather (1.6 mm), EXA Shell over 3D injected cage and microfiber in its upper. This formulation maximizes protection and durability. Its interior is lined with breathable mesh for enhanced comfort. The Wildfire GTX, on the other hand, uses a durable mesh with Gore-Tex lining. Please see Upper section above for more details.
Cushioning and support. These Salewa approach shoes employ different technologies under the foot. An Ortholite footbed helps cushion each ride in the Wildfire GTX. It sits atop the shoe’s EVA midsole.
The Multi Fit Footbed Plus (MFF+) is incorporated in the Wildfire Edge. It uses interchangeable layers so wearers can customize its shape according to their preference. Additionally, an Edging Plate is placed under the toes for an extra level of stiffness. This feature aids climbers during ascents.
Outsole. Both the Wildfire Edge and Wildfire GTX come with a Pomoca rubber outsole. It is made from Butilic compound that offers grip on wet and dry conditions.
Lacing system. These two approach shoes from Salewa feature the brand’s very own Climbing Lacing system. It extends to the toe for a more precise fit and greater adjustability.
Other features. Another plus point for the Wildfire Edge is the Switchfit adjustment. During climbs, when owners tighten the lace at the rear eyelet, it will pull their foot toward the toe box, simulating a rock shoe fit. Then, once done climbing, they can loosen the lace, giving them roomier forefoot and greater hiking comfort. The stretch gaiter used in the Wildfire Edge’s upper will also help in switching from hiking to climbing mode.
