Overview of this review
Updates to Oboz Wind River III BDry
- The third version of the Oboz Wind River BDry is designed for wearers tackling challenging trails. Looking at the facade, this iteration has fewer overlay coverage than its precursor. The said change is one of the reasons why it weighs about 10 grams less.
- The designers updated the composition of its midsole unit. Previously made of bi-density EVA with PU heel pod and nylon shank, it now comes with a mono-density EVA forefoot, cored out PU heel pod and a TPU chassis (which acts as shank). The BFit Deluxe insole exits the Oboz Wind River waterproof boot and is replaced by the O Fit insole for additional cushioning.
- Making a comeback in this boot is the Wind River outsole. There are, however, changes with how the lugs are shaped and placed. One of the most visible modifications is seen in the set of V-shaped lugs. They are now found along the sides.
Size and fit
The Wind River III BDry is a generally true-to-size Oboz hiker for men and women. It comes in regular US sizes and is offered in medium width. It features dual-zone lacing that allows different tensions below and above the ankle. According to Oboz, these boots are designed with a wide forefoot and narrow heel area which grants ample room for toe splay and prevent slippage, respectively.
This mid-top backpacking boot from Oboz features the Wind River outsole. Its surface is filled with 4.5mm-deep lugs of various shapes—irregular in the middle and V-shaped along the lateral and medial sides. Triangular protrusions are also strategically placed. All of these are responsible for delivering traction to the user. Special patterns found on the front and back ends assist the wearer during uphill and downhill trails, respectively.
The midsole unit has three components: a single-density EVA forefoot for cushioning, a cored out PU heel pod for support (without the added bulk) and an asymmetrical TPU chassis for a firm yet flexible underfoot. Atop this element is the removable O Fit insole. It provides underfoot comfort, keeps a dry environment and helps maintain the position of the foot inside the boot.
The upper of the Oboz Wind River III BDry is a combo of abrasion-resistant textile and waterproof nubuck leather. The vent panels are noticeably large to deliver breathability. A BDry PU bootie lines its interior, keeping it watertight. There is a molded rubber toe cap that serves as a shield and reinforcement.
The closure system features webbing eyelets, metal loops and hooks. Fit management is made possible by the round lace that runs through them. There is a pull tab at the heel for on and off convenience.
