Taking the design foundation developed by Bill Bowerman, the Nike X Off-White Waffle Race sports the translucent nylon upper construction that sits atop its rubber sole. In addition to this collaborative design is the spikes on its outsole and its hiking cord laces fastening the shoe at anchor points just like the outdoor gear.

One of Nike’s most iconic silhouettes today, the Nike Waffle Racer was initially introduced in 1974. The silhouette plays a big role in the history of the Swoosh brand as it was the first running shoe Nike has released which was created thanks to Bill Bowerman’s waffle maker. Bowerman was desperate to find a solution on how to successfully shift runners from the crushed cinder track into the artificial cement track. That led him to fiddle with his waffle iron and it turned out to be an “almost perfect”  mold for a running shoe outsole.

From that little experiment, the Nike Waffle Racer was born and it was reportedly responsive, impact absorbent, and an efficient running shoe for different running surfaces. With top-quality performance, the Waffle Racer was considered as the “first major innovation” that restructured the mechanics of the footwear industry. The original Waffle Racer silhouette was manufactured in Japan and it featured a nylon upper construction and came in the red and white colorway.

The Nike Waffle Racer has witnessed various kinds of alterations over the years and multiple versions of the sneaker were released. In December of 2019, Virgil Abloh’s Off-White label and the Nike brand teamed up for a Waffle Racer collaborative release, the Nike Waffle Racer Off-White. The collab sneaker exhibits a design foundation that was taken from Bill Bowerman’s original Waffle Racer design.

  • The Nike X Off-White Waffle Racer comes in three striking colorways namely, “White,” “Black,” and “Vivid Sky.”
  • Virgil Abloh’s Off-White “personal stamp” such as the zip-tie that is at the laces of the sneaker.
