History of Nike SB Blazer Mid XT
First released as a basketball shoe, the Nike Blazer was the preferred sneaker for the sport and was first worn by George “The Iceman” Gervin. It featured a leather upper, mesh nylon tongue, and vulcanized rubber sole. The shoe eventually crossed its way off the courts and became a favorite casual kick.
With the 80s boom of the skateboarding sport, Nike Blazer became a favorite within the scene for its steady grip and sturdy make. Inevitably the shoe transitioned into the world of skateboarding and is now marketed under Nike’s sub-brand the Nike SB. It has since been re-interpreted in numerous ways, from Nike SB Lows to Mids and Highs to different materials for its upper.
In 2017, Nike let pro skateboarder, Donovon Piscopo, modifies the Blazer according to his preference. The shoe’s collar was shortened for skate pleasure, while the upper was upgraded to leather and added a rubber toecap for durability against grip tape.
