Nike Air Max 1 OG History

The Nike Air Max 1 is one of Nike's iconic sneakers of all time and the first one to feature a visible Nike Air cushioning unit in the sole. Footwear designer Tinker Hatfield and developer Mark Parker worked hand-in-hand in coming up with the design of the Air Max 1 that was first released in 1987. It was inspired by the Centre Georges Pompidou, a structure in Paris.

Over the years, the Air Max 1 underwent several tweaks here and there to accommodate the brand's newest technologies such as the Hyperfuse, the Lunarlon soles, the Flyknit uppers, and so on. As a result, its shape changes gradually with a bulkier toe box and a wider profile in general.

The iconic shoe celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017 and the Nike team worked deliberately in recreating the original Air Max 1 silhouette to commemorate such an event. The Nike Air Max 1 OG was first released in limited quantities in March 2017 as part of the Air Max Day 2017 and re-released as a general release in September of the same year.
