I got the Nike Adapt BB on the first day of its release here in the Philippines. I instantly fell in love with it—from its box, charging mechanism, technology, colorways, and material.

It’s amazing! The quad fit mesh underneath and the high tension ballistic mesh on top are awesome. I have never thought we would transition from leather to mesh with better support.

The reflective silver swoosh is a winner, with another small swoosh under it. The four circles on the heel are well incorporated with the swoosh. The details on the tongue are also well done.

Its cushioning is made of soft, plush material, which is lightweight and very responsive. The heel support is just right and properly placed.

Meanwhile, the midsole design, composed of little holes, adds a very distinctive aesthetics.

Most importantly, the “brain” is a big WOW!! I am floored with it. The two buttons with interchangeable colors are top-notch!

These are not just designed for aesthetic purposes. These are definitely made for performance.

The outsole has great design—simple but working. It is easy to pair with any basketball uniform. I loved the clear icy blue colorway on its sole.

Although, it kinda pick up a lot of dust, but cleaning after a day of use would do. Streamlined tractions are perfect for movements. The soft sole gives more cushion and court feel.

Nike Adapt BB has amazing details overall.

Lace engine

Fast and advanced, Adapt BB’s lacing technology can go beyond the 100% of lacing. It gives you the freedom to customize your fit.

Its responsive Android and IOS apps make it easy to use. The app is also easy to install and regularly updates.

The lace engine really helps in shaping the shoe for your foot. As it secures your foot to the shoe, the lace feels like it is wrapping all around your foot.

Interchangeable colors makes it more attractive. How I wish the light stays on, but I think it automatically turns off to save battery life span.

Charging system

The charging pad is easy to use. All you need to do is just put the shoes on top. I also love the charging pad’s colorway and matte finish. It is also easy to install and store.

Re-charging the shoes only takes 4 hours to fully charge. The battery can last to 14 days on one full charge with the shoes being used daily.

I have played one season, a total of 14 games, with this shoe. And in six pre-season games, even if take out the lace engine, it is still one of the best performance basketball shoes I have used.

It is definitely a head-turner on court. People often asked me to show them how it works. The sound of the lace engine was a rockstar.

Everybody I played against with wanted to hear it. If you are a sneakerhead with the love for tech advancements, this shoe is a must for a solid performer on court.

I had lots of fun playing in this shoe.

The pivot circle lines on the shoes are perfectly positioned, making great court feel. It screams loud when you move, so it’s amazing on clean courts. However, it needs a little wiping on dusty courts.

Like the Jordan 3, the Adapt is almost no break-in feel. You can play with it right out of the box and is beasty on court movements.

I have never worn a translucent sole this sticky on court. It is super responsive from the get-go.

Nike Adapt BB is super bouncy and creates great compression on the heel. It has a full length cushioning, which makes it an added factor. It’s like having pillows underneath your foot.

Adapt BB has amazing support although it has a little wobble on lateral movements. Regardless, this can be solved by adjusting the lace engine.

The internal heel counter works with the external heel clip. This shoe has great overall lockdown with no heel slippage for a lockdown feel.

It’s insane! The fit is fully adjustable and can be tightened more than 100%. Full customization on the app is on point. Your prefered lace settings can be saved for future use.

Before, it has three modes; Now, it has five. The 50% tightness is already good for a ball game. Your feet won’t get too tired, thus making it a very comfortable basketball shoe.

It is waterproof. I have used the pair under the rain, and it’s ok. It can be worn for travel purposes and out of the country trips.

The rubber is soft, so I think it won’t last that long for outdoor basketball games on cement floors. Believe it or not, the Adapt BB is also great for scooter riding.

It is true to size.

It is a little narrow. Regardless, I have wide feet, but it was still okay.

General opinion

For $350, it is a little pricey. However, it’s more advanced than the first HyperAdapt 1.0, yet it’s half the price.

The app is stable. I really love the color-changing buttons, and even my art students always want to try changing it. It’s the closest to the Nike mag shoe designed by Tinker Hatfield.

It is a great step to future of adaptability, and it’s great for people with disabilities. Thus, it can be used beyond basketball.

The lace engine is a big step towards great things, and the sound will turn heads. It has easy to clean sole. I would love to have all the colorways.

Made from premium materials; It seems mesh works well on these pairs.

It has very fast innovative lace engine —oh, the sound it makes is a pleasure to hear.

It has a little wobble on lateral cuts, although thicker socks and tighter lacing will solve this.

I’m a former high school varsity player but still competes at commercial leagues and small basketball tournaments. Also, I’m a full-time visual artist and an art teacher. I am a Nike fan, and I have more than 200 basketball shoes—all Nike. Everyday, I play basketball after work, so I think I can give a proper shoe review about pairs that I've worn on and off-court. My favorite pairs are Jordan 3, 4 and 11. As of today, I wear the Hyper Adapt B.B. during basketball games and tournaments.

Good to know

A technological leap indeed, the Nike Adapt BB shoe is proof that we have come a long way since the very first classic basketball shoes. With the intent to bring adaptability to a whole different ball game, it seems that the pair has achieved just that. Featuring the Nike Fit Adapt technology, it is powered by a “Bluetooth-enabled electro adaptive lacing function.” The mobile application enables the wearer to make fit adjustments based on his/ her preferences without the hassle of manually tying the shoelaces.

With the concept first going mainstream in the 80’s movie Back to the Future, Marty McFly’s kicks have been made into a reality with this pair. Although, strictly speaking, the first attempt in making the first self-lacing shoe happened in 2016 when the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 model was unveiled. The pair, however, was out of the regular folks’ price range and has never had a commercial release.

Cushion.  Turning to a tried-and-tested cushioning system, this Nike shoe made use of Lunarlon Foam. Apt with the name, the element brings a “feeling like you’re walking on the moon.” The element is inspired by the “footage of astronauts bouncing on the surface of the moon.” The material creates an illusion of defying gravity as the wearer experiences a buoyant responsive foam feel. The foam-based element that is placed in the midsole is designed to bring a soft and responsive feel for the wearers while absorbing impact.

Traction. Circular and linear traction patterns are embedded in the translucent rubber outsole of the Nike Adapt BB. This combination ensures maximum grip and traction, particularly on indoor courts. But this shoe also works on a variety of outdoor surfaces.

Length and Width. The Nike Adapt BB shoe has a standard width and length. There have not been any reported sizing issue.

Lockdown. Veering away from the traditional lacing setup, the Nike Adapt BB makes use of an uncanny set of tools under its hood. It is a combination of parachute chords, a hard casing and a motor embedded into the shoe for foot lockdown and fit customizability.

While the shoe seems to sport a laceless look, the parachute chords act as laces. Lumped together with this is a 40 by 50 mm casing  that holds “a three-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer to match; a capacitive copper layer to register foot force; a Bluetooth sensor; a 505-mAh battery that can last between 10 and 20 days and charge wirelessly.” Also, a motor is linked to the chords to allow for the necessary adjustments from the wearers. This mechanism is connected to the Nike Adapt app, which gets rid of the need for manual adjustment. However, buttons on the side of the soleplate are can also facilitate the adjustments of one doesn’t have a phone.

The motor used for tightening can exert 240 Newton-meters of force - a force strong enough to lift 30 pounds of weight.

The upper material of the Nike Adapt BB shoe is a fusion of Quadfit and Flyknit. The topmost layer is composed of a Flyknit layer which had its roots from running shoes. This knit-based material delivers a seamless feel while reducing waste as it has a one-piece construction. This element, when used, creates a lightweight and sock-like feel. Breathability is also a perk for this material.

Underneath this knit-based material is the Quadfit mesh. This internal element is designed to conform to the contours of the player’s foot while retaining its shape and without overstretching. Made out of four axes of fibers, this setup delivers support from multiple directions without having too constrictive a feel. This element has also been applied in the design of different footwear types, including soccer cleats.

For ease of access when putting on the pair, a pull tab has been stitched unto the front area of the shoe.

Made for indoor courts as well as the streets, the Nike Adapt BB brings a versatile look. With numerous colorways made available since its release, the shoe allows for a number of possibilities in terms of looks. Because the shoe is already a show-stopper with the modern electronic feel of the LED lights incorporated into the design, it would not hurt to lie-low with one's garments. A plain top paired with some pieces of denim is enough. This getup’s rather subdued look would allow onlookers a sweet 360-view of the pair.

On the court, of course, the traditional basketball jersey and shorts is always a classic. Having bolder colors for this look could also compliment the more subdued neutral shades that were released.

Nike Adapt BB “Mag”

Inspired by the pair that started it all, a “Mag” colorway is predominantly gray with splashes of blue. The pull tabs feature the red, yellow, and green buttons found in its muse. At the lateral side of the shoe is a bold Nike swoosh colored in a lighter tone of gray. Reinforcing the ubiquity of the brand logo, another smaller Swoosh in blue can be found. A huge chunk of the soleplate, primarily in the forefoot is also tinted with the sky-like hue.

Nike Adapt BB “The Future of the Game”

Bringing a menacing vibe to the courts and the streets, the Future of the Game colorway of the Nike Adapt BB looks mysterious and sharp. The colorway dresses the innovative pair in a Dark Grey and Punch Red color combo. The upper is drenched in different shades of gray. Perhaps the magic of this palette can only be truly appreciated when the red buttons light up. Because of the red lights emitted by the shoes, a modern vibe emanates from them.

Nike Adapt BB “Dark Grey”

Bringing an urban feel to the Nike Adapt basketball shoe, the Dark Grey colorway uses a monochrome effect for the model. The upper is still primarily grey with minute elements again colored with greyish tones peppered throughout the pair. The buttons found at the pull tabs are painted in grey as well as a small Nike logo contained in a bigger one. The buttons located at the lateral side of the soleplate is drenched in red.

Nike Adapt BB “Jayson Tatum Exclusive”

As the first player to sport the Nike Adapt BB on the court, it just seems appropriate for Jason Tatum to get his very own exclusive colorway. Instead of sporting his team’s colors, the player went for neon green, which covers the outsole as well as a part of the upper. The tongue, the heel counter, and the Swoosh, on the other hand, are overlaid with black leather. On the outsole, Tatum’s son’s name ‘Deuce’ is printed and adds as a nice personal touch.

  • The Nike Adapt BB shoe is waterproof.
  • The pair comes with a wireless charger when purchased. The battery levels of the Nike Adapt BB could also be tracked through the changing of the shoe’s lights.
  • One full charge for the pair lasts for fourteen days.
