Overview of this review
Updates to New Balance 840 v4
- The New Balance 840 v4 is a neutral running shoe that’s created for the roads. It is made of synthetic materials that aim to keep the foot comfortable and secure throughout the activity. Unlike the third version in the series, the 840 v4 predominantly features printed overlays with mild stitching for reinforcement. And instead of open mesh, the cloth-like engineered mesh now graces the cover system.
- Underfoot cushioning is provided by a full-length ABZORB® unit and an EVA Strobel Board. These elements combine to keep the foot comfortable throughout the running session. Covering the foam base are rubber compounds which serve as protective barriers against the abrasive nature of the surfaces.
Size and fit
The New Balance 840 v4 features a standard running shoe length, making it capable of accommodating the regular sizing preferences of consumers. When it comes to width, the available options are B – Narrow, D – Medium and 2E – Extra Wide for men, and 2A - Narrow, B - Medium, D - Wide, 2E - Extra Wide for women.
A Strobel Board connects the midsole and the upper. It is made up of EVA which adds a bit more cushioning to the underside of the foot.
The Ndurance rubber is placed in the high-wear areas of the outsole, and its purpose is to protect the rest of the sole unit from the potentially debilitating effects of surface exposure and abrasion.
The forefoot section of the outsole makes use of blown rubber, which is also used in other New Balance shoes like the NB 990 v4 and NB 860 v9. It is a malleable material that provides traction and protection. Also, its spongy nature adds a bit of responsive cushioning for the foot.
Flex grooves allow the sole unit to be more flexible. Such a design encourages the natural bending capacity of the toe joints, thus energizing the toe-off phase of the gait cycle.
ABZORB® is a proprietary cushioning system from New Balance. It is a polymer unit that is derived from foam, and it runs the entire length of the New Balance 840 v4. Its job is to absorb impact shock and transmit the energy to the foot and leg, thereby invigorating the runner to take the next step with ease and sureness.
The top section of the platform has an even surface. This configuration allows the wearer to add custom inserts without worrying about insufficient in-shoe space.
The upper unit of the New Balance 840 v4 utilizes engineered mesh which has a cloth-like disposition. This soft and flexible material allows the foot to flex naturally and be free of irritation. Moreover, its porous façade accommodates airflow into the foot-chamber.
There are thin synthetic overlays that reinforce the upper. These printed add-ons don’t have a lot of weight, and they help in hugging the foot securely.
The padded tongue and collar hug the upper dimensions of the foot. They also mitigate the force of movement that's generated during the run.
An external heel counter with the ‘840 v4’ branding holds the rear portion of the foot in place, preventing it from wobbling or exiting the shoe unintentionally.
