Good to know

  • One of New Balance’s most popular, budget-friendly shoes comes around for a 3rd ride as it makes headway in the lightweight stability trainer category. Featuring a new, more durable mesh with an overall slight reduction in weight, runners will have a shoe that answers previous concerns of the lack of upper durability in a ride that is lighter than ever.
  • New Balance also includes a new injection-molded EVA in the midsole. As it spans the entire shoe, there is improved transition from the back to the front. The foam is also known for its moderate responsiveness and durability in a very light package.
  • Despite the moderate cushioning and the number of stability features, the 720 v3 weighs less on the scale compared to the previous model. New Balance uses lightweight materials in the new model, including the upper and the beefy outsole.
  • The stability of the shoe gets up a notch with the new molded heel insert. It greatly helps with the prevention of heel slippage as it cradles the heel in support and comfort. New Balance ramps up the comfort of the shoe by adding a removable, cushioned insole. Runners who want more stability or a more personalized comfort can replace the insole with customized orthotics.

The fit of the 720 v3 is largely the same as the earlier model. New Balance designed it for runners with average dimensions in the heel, midfoot, and forefoot. There is a small change in the new model as there is slightly more volume in the forefoot. The added volume will be good news for those who prefer more space on top of the foot. New Balance offers wide and extra wide widths on top of the usual medium or standard width. Like the prior version, the sizing of the 3rd installment of the 720 is fairly standard. Sizes are from 7 to 18 for the men’s and 5 to 15 for the women’s.

A beefy outsole with an almost full-contact outsole enhances the stability of the shoe. New Balance covers the regular tread pattern in the outsole with the tested Ndurance rubber for better durability and traction. The decoupled heel helps works with the ABZORB in the midsole to soften the impact of landings and to disperse shock.

For a no-fuss shoe with hardly any bells and whistles, the midsole is surprisingly heavily populated by New Balance’s best technologies. Located in the heel is the ABZORB foam, which is made of Dupont Isoprene rubber and proprietary technologies, for unbelievable shock-dispersal. The lightweight nature of the shoe belies the fact that it is filled with optimal stability features.

There is the presence of a dual-density foam just beneath the arch to hold the medial side in place every time the runner rolls inward. What makes the dual-density foam even more effective is the TS2 medial post that runs from the outer to the inner side of the shoe. It is made of composite TPU and really holds the shoe together on both the lateral and medial sides for a very stable run.

The new IMEVA spans the entire length for better heel to toe transition and more consistent cushioning.

The new upper is made of a lighter and more durable mesh. It has good stretch that allows the upper to hug the foot in comfort. The upper of the shoe is as breathable as the New Balance 720 v4.

Providing support and structure are TPU overlays that are uniquely stitched in the medial side and bonded in the lateral section. These synthetic overlays have a major role in securely locking the midfoot.

The rear part of the shoe includes a new molded heel insert. This is made of very light materials and conforms to the shape of the heel very well. Rearfoot movement is effectively lessened by the insert as it wraps the foot nicely. The interior comfort and personalized fit are enhanced by the removable insole.
