Bottom line

A well-rounded shoe that can be used for activities on or off the trail - the Meindl Lugano leather boots gets tons of praises for being amazingly comfortable. The spot-on fit, solid construction, and grippy outsole are all to be expected from this low-cut performance footwear. It's one tough hiker for sure and its hefty price tag hasn't discouraged many adventurers from getting their pair.

Lastly, these shoes are on the heavy side which means they're more suitable for backpacking with medium to moderate load.

Facts

-The Meindl Lugano is a classic hiker that features an all-leather upper using waxed Nubuck. The interior is also lined with soft leather for added protection, warmth and comfort. There's also a removable footbed that adapts to the shape of the foot.

-For grip and stability on light to moderate terrain, this shoe comes with the Meindl Comfort Hiker outsole.

This shoe is a low-cut model built using the Meindl Lugano Comfort Fit last which has more space at the toe section and a firm grip on the heel. This gives the toes some room to move and spread naturally. Also, the defined contour of the last promotes easier rollover when walking.

Since it has a lower shaft, the shoe provides more freedom of movement around the ankle. The tongue and collar are lightly padded for a comfortable fit while the traditional lace-up closure enables easy adjustment of the tightness.

The sole of this shoe is made of durable rubber that is exclusively designed by Meindl. It features semi-aggressive lugs that deliver a good grip on rocky terrain. There also isn't enough space between these lugs so no stone or large debris can get stuck and compromise the wearer's comfort. And like other Meindl footwear, this model is completely resoleable.

For added cushion and support, the shoe comes with the Comfort Fit cork insole. It has a wider sole base which allows for a wider stance. This footbed also features a snug-fitting heel for a more precise fit. In addition, it has more width on the ball of the foot and straight adjustment of the big toe.

For the upper, this shoe features premium Nubuck leather. Everything, from the overlays, sides, and vamp are all made of leather. The sections of the upper are beautifully stitched together, giving the Meindly Lugano its classic, polished design. This hiker lacks a waterproof membrane which makes it less suitable for wet conditions. Nonetheless, its Nubuck upper is waxed so it provides some protection against light rain.

Lining the shoe interior is fleece and leather which do not only offer protection but also some warmth. This makes the Lugano hiker a good walking shoe in the spring or in moderately cold days.

Completing the upper is a traditional lace-up closure with round laces for easy adjustment of the fit.

Meindl and Danner are two popular brands that make high-quality leather shoes. Both the Lugano and Mountain 600 shoes have roomy toe boxes to accommodate wide feet. But they do have some notable differences.

Use. The Danner Mountain 600 Low features the Multigrip outsole by Vibram which is suitable for both wet and dry surfaces. It is also lined with a waterproof membrane that seals water out. For these reasons, it makes a great choice for hiking in extremely wet conditions or in trails that include crossing streams or stepping in puddles.

Materials. While the Lugano shoes only come in the Nubuck upper, the Danner Mountain 600 comes in two variants - suede and full-grain leather. Both Nubuck and full-grain leathers are highly durable and resistant to abrasion and scuffing. Also, the Danner shoes come in multiple colorways. However, if you prefer a classic hiker, the Meindl Lugano is the way to go.

Price. While both these shoes are considered "premium" shoes, the Meindl Lugano shoes have a lower price tag than the Danner Mountain 600. It's a great option for anyone looking for a heavy-duty pair of leather hikers at a great deal.
