Overview of this review
Construction of the Mavic Deemax Pro
The Deemax Pro is a mountain cycling shoe. It was developed in collaboration with champion enduro racer Fabien Barel with the sole purpose of creating footwear that will meet the needs of enduro cyclists.
It features a reinforced upper that protects the foot against the elements of the mountain. Meanwhile, the sole unit provides excellent traction on both wet and dry terrains.
Moderate stiffness. The Energy Grip AM outsole covers the bottom of the Deemax Pro. It is a rubber compound with high-abrasion resistance, allowing it to withstand walking on rough surfaces. It has a score of 60 out of 100 on the Mavic Energy Transfer Index, meaning it is stiff enough to provide reliable energy transfer, but still offers flexibility to make walking comfortable.
Traction. The Contragrip top outsole enhances traction. It features an aggressive lug pattern that bites soil and rocky surfaces.
Shock absorption. This pair of cycling shoes also features a layer of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam. It decreases the shock felt by the foot during hiking, for longer-lasting comfort.
The Deemax Pro employs a two-hole cleat system. Mavic advises using a 1-mm plate if you have Shimano or Crankbrothers cleats. This is compatible with the following clipless pedals: Funn Ripper, Shimano PD-M520, Crankbrothers Mallet E LS, DMR V-Twin, Nukeproof Horizon CS, to name a few.
All-around comfort. A 3D breathable mesh is used for the upper of the Mavic Deemax Pro. This fabric ensures that the foot stays fresh and dry, even during hot conditions. There are also perforations on the quarters to aid in aeration.
The Ergo 3D Tongue provides additional comfort to the wearer. This element, combined with the cushioned collar, delivers a secure foothold.
Lockdown. This pair of mountain cycling shoes uses a traditional lacing system for fit adjustments. There is also a single strap at the top that helps with the lockdown.
Protection. The collar features an asymmetric design. The medial side is made higher, protecting the ankle against abrasion during extreme riding conditions.
Synthetic overlays protect the mesh. There are also additional reinforcements placed on the toe and the heel sections.
The Mavic Deemax Pro features an Ortholite sockliner. The Ortholite insoles are known for their long-term cushioning, breathability, and moisture management. They aim to keep the foot comfortable even when the terrain gets tough.
