Updates to Hoka One One Mach 2

  • The Hoka One One Mach 2 is an addition to the global roster of road running shoes. It is also an update to a fresh series that’s aimed at people who desire speed training and daily running sessions.
  • The design of this update remains minimal, with engineered mesh and sparing use of printed overlays gracing the upper. This lightweight configuration aims to accommodate the natural form of the foot, securing it while allowing it to move freely.
  • Underfoot cushioning is the responsibility of the PROFLY™, a thick compound that runs the entire length of the Hoka One One Mach 2. It has a soft heel and a firm forefoot for heightened impact mitigation and forward propulsion. Rubberized foam protects against wear-and-tear while also ensuring grip over the surfaces.
  • The Mach 2 is often compared to the Hoka One One Clifton 5 because they both have similar-looking designs. But the Clifton model is different because it has a slightly heavier weight and it still uses the industry-standard EVA foam.

Size and fit

The Hoka One One Mach 2 is touted to be larger than the usual measurements. It is recommended for runners to try one that’s half-a-size smaller to achieve a more pleasant in-shoe experience. It is healthy to test a shoe first or scour consumer feedback before making a purchase decision.

When it comes to width, the available options are D – Medium for men and B – Medium for women. They are the fit profiles that accommodate medium foot dimensions.

Outsole

The outsole unit of the Hoka One One Mach 2 is made using rubberized foam. This generous layer is tasked with protecting the midsole from the unpleasant effects of surface exposure and wear. It also offers traction through its tread-pattern and extra cushioning through its malleable construction.

Flex grooves allow the sole unit to bend in conjunction with the foot as it moves through the gait cycle. The toe-off phase is the one that benefits the most from this mechanism as it is the act that involves the most foot flexibility.

Midsole

The midsole unit of the Hoka One One Mach 2 is made up of PROFLY™, a full-length cushioning unit that aims to provide balanced performance. The heel part of this technology is soft to ensure impact mitigation while the front portion is firm to encourage an energized toe-off.

The Early Stage Meta-Rocker Geometry is a curved midsole shape that facilitates a smooth and well-rounded heel-to-toe transition.

This running shoe for neutral pronators has an evenly constructed topsole that permits the natural stance of the foot whether in motion or in an idle position.

Upper

The façade of the Mach 2 is comprised of engineered mesh, which is a cloth-like material that provides a flexible and breathable coverage. A near-seamless construction prevents hot spots from forming and causing irritation to the skin.

A few printed overlays adorn the upper. They are located on the instep as eyelet reinforcements and the rear portion as brand placements. An additional purpose of these synthetic prints is to bolster the façade, preventing it from tearing apart or quickly losing structure.

The tongue and collar are padded. These parts of the façade are designed to cushion the topmost portions of the foot, preventing them from wobbling or exiting the interior chamber unexpectedly.

A pull tab is stitched on the back of the collar. This fabric flap is meant to help the runner when it comes to wearing the shoe and removing it.
