They perfectly serve their purpose, without any noticeable drop in performance. They are also quite comfortable.
A good all-round rock shoe and one of the most comfortable that we tested.
- The Boreal Silex is a rock shoe designed for climbers who need a combination of performance, comfort, and support on extended ascents. It has a slip-lasted construction which translates to enhanced overall sensitivity.
- This shoe has been updated to modernize its form and utility. Case in point: It now comes with three adjustable straps instead of just two which the previous model had. The extra strap, situated right in the middle of the instep, eliminates dead space in the said area.
- New in this refreshed version is the Cushioned Heel System (CHS). This proprietary tech puts a shock-mitigating EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) patch underneath the heel for extra cushioning underfoot. It is approximately 6 mm in thickness.
Downturn. The Silex is one of Boreal’s neutral rock climbing shoes. The flatness of its profile gives wearers enough comfort on multi-pitch climbs. Kicks of this type are capable of scaling fissures and similar features with relative ease.
Applications. This neutral Boreal climbing shoe is built for boulder projects, sport routes, and trad problems. Its engineering enables wearers to ascend vertical faces. Beginners and intermediate senders may climb in it both indoors and outdoors.
Boreal’s Silex is a rock climbing shoe with a below-the-ankle cuff height. As a unisex gear, it may require women to go down a full size to get a comfy, accurate fit. It has a straight (symmetric) interior, allowing the foot to rest in the shoe with as little tension as possible. Since it comes with a leather upper, slight stretching might occur over time. A customized fit in it is made possible by the shoe’s Velcro closure.
Midsole. The Silex has an adequately rigid midsole for underfoot support and protection. It is a half-length component.
Outsole. This beginner-friendly rock climbing shoe delivers enough friction on a variety of surfaces with its long-wearing FS-Quattro outsole. It is made of a type of rubber compound that gives it the capability to perform over a wide range of temperatures. Its thickness depends on the size bought; it can be anywhere between 4 mm and 4.6 mm.
The user’s foot is safely enveloped in the Boreal Silex’s split leather upper. It comes with a breathable polyurethane (PU) liner, called Air Net. Its tongue is sufficiently padded for additional in-shoe comfort. A rubber rand reinforces its lower region for extra climbing security and abrasion protection. It has a pair of pull loops at the heel for easy on and off.
Completing the equation of the Silex’s upper is the shoe’s fit management system. It consists of three adjustable hook-and-loop straps.
