Size and fit

The Asics Gel Mai's nylon mesh upper with suede overlays provides a lightweight and breathable comfort, while the shoe's unique asymmetrical lacing system tightens not only the forefoot but also around the ankle for a secure and lockdown fit. The Asics Gel Mai is available in both men's and women's sizes.

Asics Gel Mai Style

With its futuristic and head-turning design, the Asics Gel Mai has gone beyond sportswear and is reintroduced as a trendy lifestyle sneaker that could inject a standout look to every outfit. The kick's bulky midsole with a wave-like design coupled with an asymmetrical lacing system fits right in with today's dad/chunky sneaker trend. It exudes a retro running vibe with an effortlessly cool demeanor, which caught the attention of multiple brands for collaborations.

The sneaker would look great paired with cropped pants to showcase the shoe's unique style and at the same time balancing out the shoe's busy silhouette. Finish your look with a t-shirt and a jacket for a streetwear-inspired ensemble or opt for a pair of joggers and a sweatshirt for the ultimate athleisure look.

Notable Features

With such an unorthodox design, everything about the Asics Gel Mai is notable. It starts with the most apparent and most unconventional feature of the kick that is its asymmetrical lacing system. This system features elasticated laces with attached piping that weaves around the ankle, which fastens not only the forefoot but also the shoe's collar area for a further lockdown fit.

The kick's mixed-material upper also stands out as it features cage-like leather overlays for reinforcements and added visual appeal. Lastly, the typical Asics Tiger stripe logo is relocated in the rear part of its chunky midsole and displays a two-dimensional design crafted from a semi-translucent material.

Asics Gel Mai History

A tech-inspired design by Asics from the 90s, the Gel Mai was introduced to the public as a relatively lighter alternative to the running mainstays of the brand during that time. With its boldly unique silhouette, the Asics Gel Mai was a notable departure from recognizable Asics classics such as the Gel Lyte III and Gel Lyte V. The shoe is the brand's first model with a one-piece upper with the Stripe logo relocated in the rear part of the midsole.

The shoe was once popular amongst serious athletes for its excellent support and cushioning, while early sneakerheads prefer it for its one of a kind style that exhibited the 90's infatuation for bold and flashy designs.

With the brand's continued technological advancements and steadfast dedication to their classic silhouettes, Asics reintroduced the Gel Mai in 2017 through a collaborative shoe with Ronnie Fieg. This reissue started a slew of other brands to put their own interpretation on the shoe. Today the Gel Mai is available in numerous colorways and materials.
