Overview of this review
Good to know
- The upper style and structure get the main areas of the changes in the Asics Hyper Tri 3. Asics introduces a rib-like design of thin and bonded overlays all over the shoe. The update gives the shoe a little more consistent support from the heel to the forefoot.
- For good or bad, Asics also changed the style from the rather very colorful tones to a more subtle design. There were already a handful who really liked this change.
- Another obvious change in this design is the removal of the heel loop. This is replaced by a very prominent tongue loop that should really help triathletes during quick transitions.
- While the tongue is not as thick as before, it is lined with very smooth and plush fabric. The ankle collar gets more padding for more comfort upon step-in.
The fit of the Hyper Tri 3 is very much the same as the prior model. There is enough toe box and forefoot room while there is an enhanced midfoot hold because of the overlays all over the shoe. The heel also has enough security for quick turns without losing balance. It generally runs true to size.
A big part of the underfoot of the Gel Hyper Tri 3 is the DuraSponge blown rubber in the midfoot and forefoot. It adds a little more cushioning to the shoe and enhances the grip of the shoe.
Same as with the popular Asics Gel Cumulus 20, the shoe's heel and other areas are fitted with the tough AHAR+ carbon rubber for more durability. As usual, the prominent vertical cut from the heel to the forefoot helps smoothen the runner’s transition through the gait cycle. There are flex grooves in the forefoot for more flexibility. The tri-specific drainage holes quickly let water out.
The midsole is mainly a single slice of standard EVA for traditional cushioning and durability. As it spans the length of the shoe, it should also aid in the landing to take-off movement. Asics’ award-winning Gel cushioning system is located in the heel for more shock-absorption. Like the outsole, the midsole also has holes for drainage.
Asics covers the 3rd instalment of the Hyper Tri with a supremely breathable mesh. As mentioned, the rib-like bonded overlays are strategically placed all over the shoe for lightweight support and a little more structure for quite the very minimal upper. The huge tongue loop makes shoe entry/exit very convenient.
