If low weight, cushioning, and a nimble, athletic feel outweigh the need for high stability and climbing sensitivity, the Arc’teryx Konseal FL is a worthy contender.
The Konseal FL might not look like your standard approach shoe, but it incorporates all the necessary features to perform well on rock.
It has a superb technical climbing ability and a very low weight, but our testing team agreed that the average climber needs a shoe with more focus on hiking. Lacking in comfort and support, the Konseal fell behind in the competition.
So after some weeks of daily use, we're happy to report that this is a fantastic shoe that does everything well.
Arc’teryx isn’t as well-known for its footwear as it is for its technical apparel, but the Konseal FL lives up to the brand’s high standards for quality.
A lot of approach shoes are either good on rock and scrambling terrain or good on slick trails. Very few excel at both. The new Konseal FL shoes are one of those few!
-The Arc’teryx Konseal FL (men’s and women’s) is a technical approach shoe that offers a balanced hiking and climbing performance through a combination of light yet durable materials. Its one-piece upper is paired with a unique sole geometry to render a smooth and hassle-free heel-to-toe ride.
-Underfoot, the Konseal FL uses an EVA foam as its midsole. This cushioned unit is paired with an Ortholite footbed to optimize comfort and support.
The Arc'teryx Konseal FL is an approach shoe that caters to both men and women. It is designed using a straight last to accommodate a moderate volume foot. With its traditional closure system, users will be able to personalize the fit depending on the desired level of performance.
Providing adherence on almost all types of terrain is a Vibram outsole. It is made of durable Megagrip rubber compound. At the tip of the toe is the Climbing Zone that has traction grooves to assist during ascents. The anti-slip circular lugs at the forefoot offer hardwearing traction. The square edge on the heel improves agility and enhances braking ability.
This Arc'teryx approach shoe comes with a durable ethylene-vinyl acetate or EVA midsole. This unit takes care of shock absorption and provides stability. A TPU chassis is placed at the midfoot to protect the foot against pointed rock edges. Cradling the user’s foot is a 4 mm-thick Ortholite footbed. It helps keep a fresh and odor-free interior.
The Konseal FL from Arc’teryx wears a single layer ripstop mesh fabric for its upper. This material helps keep its weight low without sacrificing durability and protection. The nubuck overlays render breathability and extra shield against abrasion. As a reinforcement, the brand designers added perimeter sidewalls and a 3D molded toe cap. Thanks to its heat-laminate construction method, stitch points are eliminated.
This approach shoe is designed with a gusseted tongue and a lightly padded collar for extra protection and comfort, respectively. Its closure system employs a round lace that goes through six pairs of webbings and two punched metal eyelets, allowing fit management. Tabs are placed at the top of the tongue and heel for a convenient on and off.
