- The Altra Intuition 4.5 was made lighter than its former version. From 215g, the weight has been reduced to 204g to allow runners to feel lighter, able to move freely or reach faster speeds.
- A major update was done on the upper. The overall design was changed to make the shoe look sleek and modern. The Altra logo is still found on the upper as one of the overlays, but linear laminates were added to enhance the aesthetic. On the back area, the band that secured the heel was replaced with Engineered Mesh that was woven tightly to mimic the shape of a heel strap. It bears the Altra name and logo on one side, and the name of the shoe on the other.
- The midsole’s look was also updated. The zero drop, as well as the InnerFlex grid design, was maintained but some variations of the shoe have an accent color on the heel part.
The Intuition 4.5 was specifically designed to cater to a woman’s foot shape. Altra refers to this as their Fit4Her technology. Because a woman’s foot is shaped differently than a man’s, female runners will benefit from how this shoe was constructed since it is custom to their foot. The standard lengths for females are available. The same can also be expected with the width.
The entire bottom of the Altra Intuition 4.5 is covered with rubber. Because it is full-length, it ensures that the bottom of the shoe is adequately protected from wear and tear. Aside from protection, the rubber material delivers the right amount of traction on most common surfaces.
The FootPod outsole technology, as also seen in other Altra shoes like the Paradigm 4, maps out the bones and tendons of the foot to help it bend naturally. To achieve this, several flex lines and grooves, as well as different colors of the rubber, indicate and separate different areas and regions.
Every Altra shoe including the Intuition 4.5 has a Zero Drop Platform. This means that the heel and forefoot areas have the same distance from the ground. The zero drop offset allows runners to feel the ground better and have a more natural body alignment. On top of that, it promotes a low-impact landing.
On the sides of the midsole, several grid-like grooves can be observed. These lines allow the midsole to move together with the runner’s foot without inhibition. As a result, the midsole becomes lighter and ot delivers a better performance no matter how vigorously the runner is moving.
Primarily, the midsole is made of EVA foam. EVA is short for Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate. Most running shoes of today have this type of material as the platform. It’s popular because it delivers comfortable cushioning that lessens the force received up landing. It also provides enough ground response and energy return.
On top of the EVA layer, an extra piece of cushioning was placed. It is called A-Bound which is a bouncy compound made of recycled materials. Its main purpose is to amplify underfoot protection and energy return.
The material that covers the dorsal part of the foot is called Engineered Mesh. Unlike standard mesh, some areas of this material were reinforced to have better integrity and to deliver more security to the runner. Despite the reinforcement, it still maintains its breathability, allowing the foot to stay cool at dry during long runs.
The toe box was specifically shaped to cater to the natural alignment of the toes. This design feature is called FootShape Toe Box. It follows the shape of the alignment of the toes to give them enough room to spread out naturally. When the shoe is worn, the big toe assumes its natural straight position for more power during toe-off, and better balance during landing.
To add a bit more protection and extend the comfort delivered, a 6mm contoured insole was incorporated. This footbed follows the natural outline of the bottom of the foot for a more secure fit and a comfortable feel.
