Good to know

The Adidas Y-3 Stan Zip is offered in men and women’s sizes. The gentlemen can choose from sizes 4.5 to 14.5 while the ladies can choose from sizes 5.5 to 10.5. The shoe’s lace-up closure is for aesthetic purposes only so the shoe is essentially a slip-on when it comes to fit. Also, the Y-3 brand is said to run a bit bigger than its Adidas counterpart so it is recommended to try the shoe in person at first.

The Adidas Y-3 Stan Zip is a modern and elegant version of its predecessor without stripping away its sporty nature. Its futuristic appeal lends a unique look to the shoe that could elevate any outfit, even the most casual t-shirt jeans combo. The shoe comes in monochromatic colors and a sleeker silhouette that could pass as a shoe for special occasions.

The Stan Smith gets a dose of Y-3 character through its soft leather upper with heat-pressed heel tab construction. The shoe features a zip-off eyestay, which removes the lace-up closure, and reveals an updated tongue with an embossed Yohji Yamamoto branding. Once zipped down, the shoe resembles a slip-on shoe with zip detailing.

The Adidas Y-3 Stan Zip ninja-style silhouette has the tongue and the collar sitting slightly higher. To keep with the shoe’s minimal look the collar is unlined while a Y-3 logo can be seen on the heel overlay. The shoe’s upper is mounted on a classic rubber outsole.

The Stan Smith was born in the early 60s from the brilliant mind of Horst Dassler – Adi Dassler’s son. Although originally named after a different tennis player, Robert Haillet, Adidas changed the name to its new endorser Stan Smith in 1971. The Adidas Stan Smith went on to be a hit in the 80s and even landed a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the undisputed best-selling shoe.

The Stan Smith has since undergone daring upgrades like adding the Boost for cushion and the Primeknit for its upper. But the most daring reinvention of the shoe is by far the Y-3 Stan Zip designed by famed fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto under the Adidas sub-brand Y-3.

Yohji Yamamoto started his career in fashion in 1972 and has had multiple recognitions for his outstanding work. Fast forward to 2002, Yohji and Adidas joined forces and decided to create a unique sportswear brand that is practical yet fueled by high fashion. They called this brand Y-3 – “Y” for the designer’s name and “3” for Adidas’ signature three stripe logo.

Y-3 is known for producing cutting-edge merchandise and sports-luxe fashion. In 2017, the Adidas sub-brand released a reinvented design of the Stan Smiths. With its futuristic and minimalist appeal, the Y-3 Stan Zip gained popularity among sneakerheads and Stan Smith’s loyal fans.
