Adidas Superstar RT History

The Adidas Superstar was launched in 1969 and was initially designed as a low-top edition of their Pro Model shoe. It was nicknamed as “shell toes,” “shell tops,” and “shell shoes” because it was the first basketball shoe to combine an all-leather upper with a rubber shell toe. It quickly caught the notice of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and his fellow professional NBA players. Within a few years, 75% of the pro ballers were wearing the Superstar, which further helped it gain popularity with fans of the game.

The Superstar had the Soft Protect padding and soft leather technology of a previous Adidas model, the Supergrip. It also featured an extra-large heel counter, adjustable arch support, and shell sole which became its main selling points. The rubber toe cap was designed to withstand constant stop-and-go movements and prevent the shoe from quickly breaking down.

The Superstar was already a well-known model by the 1980s but what quickly catapulted it into fame was the trio of RUN-D.M.C, a group of rappers who refused to follow conventional standards by the way they dressed. They often sported head-to-toe Adidas, from sneakers to tracksuits, and helped give the Superstar that cool hip-hop streetwear image.

Adidas debuted the Superstar II in the 90s. It was designed as an updated version of the original and resolved all of the issues the Superstar had, which included the faulty rubber sole that hardened and crumbled over time. Its shape was altered from the original and had extra padding added.

In 1992, Adidas launched its Originals line which is made up of all the classics that people wanted back on the shelves. The Originals line included the Superstar model with a variety of renditions and materials, such as suede and steel-toe versions.

Numerous colorways and editions have been released since then, products of collaborations and remakes of the original Superstar which is now cemented forever as an icon in Adidas footwear history.
