The Superstar, in its purest form, captivates sneakerheads with its unadorned silhouette. Stripped off of needless branding and overlays, the Adidas Superstar 80s Clean, as the name suggests, is indeed clean as a whistle. In spite of its crisp look, the shoe is still recognized for its shell-toe cap, cupsole and a hint of branding on the heel.
The Superstar, for years, has held up to its name. Considered as a big shot and an icon in the world of sneakers, modern-day sneaker culture would not be complete without its presence and its influence.
Making a debut in the year 1969, this now lifestyle sneaker initially caught the attention of NBA players. Crafted with an all-leather upper, durable rubber shell toe and a non-marking outsole, this hoop shoe was b-ball players’ go-to trainer. Urban kids, however, also took an interest, attracted with its clean, simple yet stylish aesthetics.
Among those who fell in love with its look is a distinguished 1980’s hip-hop group popularly known as Run DMC. The then basketball shoe suddenly turned into a street fashion trend, all thanks to this trio’s song entitled “My Adidas”.
With this said, the 1980s was truly a momentous decade for the brand as their creations, the Superstar included, became a must-have worldwide. In the year 2009, after nearly 30 years, Adidas saw it fit to celebrate the period by releasing the “Adidas 80’s Pack”. The pack included the Superstar, re-released in the same colorway and material as the original.
A stripped-down version of the Superstar
Over the years, we have seen this classic silhouette morph. Among the most interesting versions that were put on the market was the Adidas Superstar 80s Clean.
Launched in 2012, this iteration was stripped of the brand’s famous “Three-Stripe” logo. Adidas, however, took things further when they again reinvented this rendition in February 2015. Not only did the brand ditch the Three Stripes, but they also decided to remove the eyestay overlays, the tongue logo, and the heel patch. A small Adidas branding, however, was added on the heel.
