UGG Riviera History

Surfer Brian Smith arrived in Southern California in 1978, armed with a bag full of sheepskin boots and a dream. He was devoted to sheepskin due to the comfort it offered and wanted other people to have the same experience. He decided to build his brand in the beaches of California, which seemed to be the perfect fit as the area was known for its laidback lifestyle.

Smith founded the UGG brand and began to sell the sheepskin boots, which became an instant hit. Three years later, the brand became the embodiment of South California culture, with surf shops and other specialty stores up and down the coast selling the boots. UGG shoes then transcended the beaches to reach small towns and cities, where ladies from different backgrounds sported the boots.

Each time the winter season rolled around, ugg boots became the staple footwear of choice, sold in ski shops all over the country. Just as Smith wanted, people experienced an emotional connection with his sheepskin boots, loving them for their comfort and uniqueness. As the brand grew, new models were added to the catalog, featuring shoes that offered the same level of comfort in different silhouettes.

One such sneaker is the UGG Riviera, which showcases a simple and smooth slip-on design. It delivers comfort, a low-key profile, a stylish look, and a durable structure, offering value for the money at its price. With such features, it could be an ideal go-to shoe for individuals who are always on the move.

UGG Riviera Style

Available in two colorways: Pencil Lead and Black, the UGG Riviera features an unfussy look that will go well with many different casual outfits. Jeans and shorts, in particular, will match its relaxed and straightforward style. For a more dressed-up and chic vibe, the sneaker could also be paired with skirts, dresses, capri pants or slacks.

Fit & Sizing

Available in women’s 5-12 in regular width, the UGG Riviera offers a true-to-size fit. However, it has been perceived to run narrow by a couple of wearers, so going up a half size may be needed especially for those who are wide-footed. The sneaker is made as a slip-on, with a low collar that keeps the ankle free to move. Its upper is made up of stretchy knit fabric, delivering a flexible and breathable feel.

Notable Features

The low-top UGG Riviera’s upper is made up of stretched heathered knit fabric with leather detailing, complete with a prominently padded collar that adds a striking accent. It has a minimalist design paired with maximum comfort. There is a pull tab at the heel. Meanwhile, the midsole features a two-toned look. The only branding seen on the sneaker is the UGG logo, which is found on the heel.

Additional Info

  • This model has a generously cushioned removable insole.
  • The sneaker's flexible sole enhances its sporty profile.
  • It has a built-in arch support that uses the enerG Comfort system, delivering breathability along with anti-microbial and moisture-wicking properties.
  • The outsole features the Treadlite by UGG technology, which provides lightweight and grippy support.
