Before it became Timberland, the brand was known as the Abington Shoe Company known for its hand-stitched shoes. It was in 1952 that Nathan Swartz brought the company and moved the company to Newmarket, New Hampshire in 1965 as demand for their waterproof shoes started to pick-up. The brand has been the pioneer of waterproof boots with the Injection Molding process used in constructing durable footwear. It was only in 1973 that the company decided to change its name from the Abington Shoe Company to Timberland Company.

Also in 1973, Timberland launched the six-inch-high work boots which became an iconic and bestselling design for the brand. The highly durable and sturdy boots were originally conceptualized for the working class or blue collar workers. The brand continued producing work boots that at the turn of the 21st century, Timberland has also dipped its hands into the design and manufacture of footwear.

Sales further increased sometime in the 1990s when wearers coming from the hip-hop and rap communities started taking a look at their boots for lifestyle and culture of the hip-hop community. Some celebrities from the hip-hop like DMX, Notorious B.I.G., Kanye West, and Mobb Deep were seen sporting these sneakers community have also embraced the design increasing the demand for the Timberland boots by three-fold.

Timberland at the onset tried to deflect their new market and its street-style identity but the brand would, later on, give in to the demand of the hip-hop culture and the growing fans of the Timberland boots. While the brand continued to reinvent itself, it stayed true to its roots as a bootmaker with profiles inspired by the original models coming from the New Hampshire brand. One of those silhouettes that seem to combine the old and new aesthetics of Timberland is the Bradstreet collection of shoes which featured oxfords, brogues, and chukka-inspired sneakers reflecting both modern and classic design inspirations. The Timberland Bradstreet Sneaker is a perfect example of achieving the right balance between modern and heritage design.
