Steve Madden Becca History
The Steve Madden, Ltd. was founded in the year 1990 with a moderate amount of $1100 as an investment which then turned out to be one of the iconic footwear brands today. How did the Steve Madden brand come to be?
American shoe designer, Steven Madden, who was born in 1958 in Queens, New York, is the founder of the Steve Madden, Ltd., which is a manufacturer of “moderately priced” footwear products. The brand mostly focuses on young women and girls. Madden also had his fair share of ups and downs as he went through his journey towards success.
His father was a textile manufacturer while his mother was a housewife. His family was a native of Long Island. Steve got a job in a shoe store while he was still in high school. It was where he immediately got a liking to the footwear business. He then spent two years of studying at the University of Miami before he moved to New York City and spent another two years selling shoes.
By the year 1980, Steve Madden started working for L.J. Simone and it is where he gained knowledge about the manufacturing and marketing of shoes. In 1988, Madden left L.J. Simone and started his own business with a partner. Unfortunately, it was not really a success.
In 1990, Madden founded the Steve Madden, Ltd., and began with selling 500 shoes of his own design from his trunk to the stores in New York City. It was the “Mary Lou” which brought him his first success. The model was a variation of the classic “Mary Jane” women’s shoe. His first retail store was opened in 1993, and in that same year, he also sought more capital and then entrusted the initial public offering of stock of his company to the Stratton Oakmont.
Things went downhill in after some years of Madden’s relationship with Stratton Oakmont as the government accused it of “many forms of financial misconduct along with several other people. In the year 2000, Madden was charged with civil and criminal charges which connect to his transactions with the firm. He pleaded guilty of the accusations in 2001, and in 2002 he was sentenced for 41 years of imprisonment in which he only served for 31 months.
The company, though, continued to run during his imprisonment but he stepped down from being the chairman but stayed as its “Creative and Design Chief.” He continued to remain in the position after his release in 2005.
After his release, the company continued its venture of expanding and continued to provide more products to meet the demands of people. It includes the Steve Madden Becca, a platform shoe for women that exhibits a clean design that also keeps up with the trend.
