Sperry Wahoo LTT Leather History
The Sperry Wahoo LTT Leather is one of the contemporary Sperry styles produced by a brand that initially flourished in the sailing world before it finally anchored into the urban street culture as a lifestyle sneaker suitable for daily wear. This lace-to-toe leather offering is a modified reinterpretation of the Authentic Original Top-Sider.
Back in the early 1930s, an avid sailor, inventor, and explorer Paul Sperry formulated a design for boat shoe’s rubber outsole that was meant to keep the feet stable on dry and wet surfaces. He was compelled to devise the siping sole after accidentally slipping on the deck of his boat while wearing a shoe that had insufficient traction.
Taking inspiration from an unlikely source, his cocker spaniel’s multi-directional paw pattern which can traverse on icy grounds without slipping, Sperry took a penknife and imitated the dog’s underfoot grooves on a rubber outsole. His discovery dramatically improved the traction of shoes used for boating but the black sole left scuff marks on the deck of the ship. He was also hard-pressed as he could not own patent rights over the siping pattern since it was already previously registered to a certain John Sipe.
Sperry resolved this by using white rubber sole and modifying the non-marking pattern using herringbone design. His idea was favored by fellow sailors, and it instantly sailed its way into the boating communities. In 1935, Sperry shoes were taking speed.
The initial model that carried the revolutionary outsole was the Canvas Circular Vamp Oxford or simply CVO, which bore a simple upper design lined with cotton. The sole was affixed to the upper using heat which made the shoe stable and comfortable. The success of this silhouette led Sperry to conceptualize a leather variation which was later coined as the Authentic Original or AO. It employed for the first time the moccasin toe stitching and saddle lacing system where the laces are stretched around the collar to tighten the fit.
By 1939, Sperry’s boat shoe found its way in the US Navy’s headquarters and became the official shoe for the US naval warfare servicemen during the World War II. During the 1960s, the Leather AO became fashionable footwear adored by university students. Soon enough, Sperry became a much-sought brand for casual wear. This concept flourished until the 1980s, and its style was featured in The Official Preppy Handbook.
Today, Sperry’s is more than a dependable shoe fitted for sailing. This lifestyle sneaker brand has evolved over the years and expanded its range of designs using tons of fabric and leather variations, colors, and styles, which are available for men, women, and kids.
