Paul tied the knot with his soulmate, a New-Haven born girl who coincidentally takes a name that is the female counterpart of his: Pauline. Together they made waves exploring the outdoors which even resulted in Paul acquiring a boat. The couple was all hands on deck with the idea and married the nautical lifestyle as the years passed.

It was serendipity when Paul discovered the innovative feature that sailors are longing for in a boat shoe. One night, he accidentally slipped and was thrown overboard his ship. He never stopped thinking of a solution to increase traction, and when they disembarked, he started to work on the sole.

There were many failed attempts before he realized that the grip that he was looking for was in the palm, or instead, the paw of his dog named Prince. He imitated the contours of the animal's feet and notched a piece of gum rubber. He then siped zigzag lines to counter the parallel movement. This creation was known to be the prototype Sperry Top-Sider which launched a new brand of sea-bound footwear in 1935.

For many decades the Sperry brand stayed relevant thanks to its revolutionary Sperry design and stylish image. Though Paul abandoned ship in 1940, the present owners of the company still stuck true to Paul's design concept of a boat shoe. More recent models like the Sperry Wahoo CVO maintained the Circular Vamp Oxford style of the classics.
