Sperry Crest Vibe Crepe Chambray History

Now based in Massachusetts, Sperry has an eight-decade-long history behind it. It all began in 1935 with Paul A. Sperry. He had fallen from the deck of his boat and into the waters of Long Island Sound, but he luckily managed to pull himself up again. The experience made him determined to come up with a much safer and more effective non-slip shoe.

Eventually, he found the right inspiration from his dog, whose paws had a unique pattern that enabled him to play on an icy ground without slipping. Sperry then used the siping method to cut a herringbone pattern into the soles of his shoes. As soon as his “boat shoes” got out, they became very popular due to their efficiency on deck, making the Sperry brand successful.

This success wasn’t limited to the original boat shoe, as Sperry turned to the casual scene. The brand created such classic and preppy staples as the Crest Vibe, which has since been recreated with many designs. Among these, the Sperry Crest Vibe Crepe Chambray stands out due to its distinct material, along with its timeless yet youthful vibe.
