Robert Greenberg founded Skechers in 1992 after his departure from L.A. Gear. It was originally intended to be a distributor of Dr. Martens, a British label by R. Griggs Ltd. After more or less a year, Greenberg had a change of plans and decided to turn it into his own brand of designing and marketing footwear. With his experience in L.A. Gear, he began marketing Skechers primarily to young and hip consumers selling skate shoes and utility cleats.
In 1993, the brand got its first big break with the introduction of the Chrome Dome, an urban street boot that reflected the increasing trend of the grunge look among young consumers. It was a unisex pair made to look well-worn and scuffed at the heel. It proved that Skechers is a brand that’s well aware of the changing trends and provides what the market wants.
Up to this day, Skechers continues to provide quality products with an emphasis on comfort, style, and practicality. And because the company kept a watchful eye on the trends of the youth market, it was able to sell well internationally.
