Comfortable, light, quick drying, and free of any gimmicky technology. That pretty much sums up my wishlist for a set of mountain bike shoes, and Shimano's AM7 fits the bill perfectly.
The AM7 is a simple and well-designed mountain bike shoe with casual skate shoe inspired styling. The Ultra-grip sole provides excellent traction, and a casual appearance makes it acceptable for apres beers. It doesn't pack quite the performance as our top-rated gravity and enduro models, but it is a solid value that gets the job done for non-competitive riders. We feel comfortable in saying it is a great mountain bike shoe that will appeal to the vast majority of recreational trail riders, especially those with a preference for the descents.
I’ve had these shoes for years, since I first switched over to clips and they’ve held up nearly perfectly. The ankle protection works exactly as expected and the soles are still in one piece. I bought them with the slight worry that the lace cover might split but it’s flawless even after the weekly abuse. The only niggle is that the sole has lifted a little from the plate where the clip is but a bit of super glue fixed that before it became a problem.
Comfortable, confindence inspiring engagement between pedal and shoe, and sneaker aesthetic are excellent. Only gripe is that the colours are limited.
Brilliant features and fit, but some may prefer a little more outright pedal grip. Buy if, You're looking for a worthy successor to the am41 and don't prize traction above all other qualities
Styling is good, stiff sole, straightforward clipping in and out.
Shimano doesn’t really put priority in naming their footwear. Instead, they focus more on each version’s improvement. The AM701 might sound familiar, and you might have a pre-existing idea of what it looks like.
Please be informed that this piece of writing is talking about the 2018 version of the Shimano AM701. It features a faux leather upper with side mesh panels for durability, protection, and breathability. The shoe employs a lace-up closure with a top strap to keep the laces in place.
Some of the significant differences of this model from its previous version are the neoprene ankle cuffs and SPD-compatible cleat design.
Adequate stiffness for leisurely biking. The Shimano AM701 has a rating of 6 out of 12 in the brand’s stiffness index. Being right in the middle of the spectrum, this shoe offers an ideal balance between flexibility and rigidity.
Gravity-specific rubber and tread design. Employing the brand’s Ultra-grip rubber sole with unique toe and heel tread design, planting the foot and walking in descending trails feels more stable and grippier.
Extended sidewalls. Reinforced sidewalls extend from the sole. They provide protection for your feet during aggressive rides.
The AM701 incorporates a 2-bolt SPD cleat design. It is compatible with these pedal models: Shimano XTR M9020 Trail SPD, Nukeproof Horizon CS CrMo Trail Pedals, and Crank Brothers Mallet E Pedals. Moreover, the shoe’s cleat area is designed to stay stable on flat pedals or when not clipped in.
Expanded cleat adjustment range. Instead of just having an 11mm-sized adjustment area, the AM701 features double this length. With a total of 22mm of cleat adjustment, the user is provided with more options for more comfortable pedal connections.
Protective structure. Several design elements of this shoe contribute to its excellent protective performance. The neoprene ankle cuffs keep rocks and debris from going inside the shoe, while Velcro top straps not only keep the foot in place but also the laces from getting caught in the bike.
Lastly, molded toecap areas provide enhanced defense against impacts and strikes.
Breathable, supple fit. Crafted from synthetic leather with mesh inserts, the uppers conform nicely to the foot’s shape while generating excellent airflow.
Excellent water management. The Shimano AM701’s materials are relatively water-resistant and dry quickly.
This footwear utilizes standard insoles. They are replaceable, which offers the owners the freedom to change into special orthotic footbeds if needed.
- Upon purchase, the Shimano AM701 comes with an extra pair of shoelaces.
- The brand just recently released the Shimano AM702, the 2020 version. It employs different upper materials.
