The Rebel Ice is the best fruit-boot I’ve used, and though pricey, it’s worth every penny if you’re venturing into the horizontal realms.
- The Rebel Ice, Scarpa’s very own fruit boot, is built for precision in ice and mixed climbing excursions. Its over-the-ankle upper is a combination of Microtech synthetic leather and Primaloft Micropile (its insulated liner).
- Its sole unit made of carbon is a stiff enough component that allows the boot to be used for dry tooling. It is engineered with pre-drilled screw holes, allowing users to conveniently attach their preferred crampons.
Scarpa’s Rebel Ice is a high-cut, unisex mountaineering boot with a fairly true-to-size fit. It comes in regular width in a decent range of standard sizes. The Velcro collar strap and the Boa lacing system allow for a personalized lockdown with relative ease. The boot’s Sock-Fit Plus construction makes the gear’s interior considerably snug. Female users are advised to go one size down to get the right fit.
This boot has the Vibram Heel Hook for an outsole. As its name suggests, this component, referred to as a rubber insert by Scarpa, anchors the foot around the heel region. Its grippy construction and ridged design offer extra assistance when dry tooling.
The Scarpa Rebel Ice has an ultra-rigid midsole. This component, which is part of the boot’s sturdy sole unit, provides ground protection and stability apart from being a boon for dry tooling. Its plantar zone is engineered with thermal insulation, contributing to the overall warming capability of the gear. For extra underfoot comfort, the boot relies on its default footbed.
Synthetic leather makes up the protective and supportive upper of the Rebel Ice. The boot’s Flex Point, tongue, and in-built gaiter are all constructed with a breathable and waterproof elastic fabric, called WinTherm, giving the Rebel Ice proper ventilation and water protection. Its liner provides a warm environment for the foot, thanks to Primaloft’s insulation technology.
Making up the boot’s lacing system, on the other hand, is the joint effort between Boa and Velcro. The Boa lacing system, in particular, makes lace-ups a convenient activity as the Boa knob (or dial) can be operated with one hand, whether the user needs to tighten or loosen the laces.
