They are expensive but as I only wear them on snow/ice for shortish runs I hope to get at least a couple of seasons out of them.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with everything from the construction and comfort of the shoe to the diverse functionality. If you have any interest in trail running through the winter, you really can’t do much better than the Salomon SPIKECROSS 3 CS.

  • 93 / 100 by Active Gear Review • Paul Shippey • Level 1 expert

I must admit, at times I felt almost invincible running in these ‘studly’ shoes. I could rip down icy trails and blast up hills with such confidence that I tended to forget I was running in icy conditions that would normally make me much more tentative. The grip is just superb.

  • 82 / 100 by Backpacker • Berne Broudy • Level 1 expert

I was able to stop on a dime on slimy rocks, and run up and down steep trails through slushy muck when other hikers were turning back.

Updates to Salomon Spikecross 3 CS

  • The Salomon Spikecross 3 CS is a running shoe that’s made for the trails. It has an aggressive design that’s tuned for the unrelenting terrain. Traction and surface control are two of the main features of this footwear that’s optimized for the off-road terrain. A unisex construction opens up the shoe for a variety of foot-dimensions.
  • The upper unit of this running companion makes use of a quick-drying membrane that staves off water and ice. Placed in the forefoot area, it ensures protection from splashes and clumps of snow. The Sensifit technology in the midfoot area hugs the medial and lateral sections of the foot, giving a snug yet customizable coverage.
  • A full-length industry-standard mid-sole foam is used in the Salomon Spikecross 3 CS. It delivers consistent cushioning throughout the gait cycle. Cushioning is improved in the heel and metatarsal region because of the addition of the SCS or Salomon’s Cushioning System. Its springy nature also allows energy to return to the runner, enabling a surer step.
  • The Winter Contagrip is the material used for the outsole unit of this product. An aggressive lug pattern heightens traction over rough and snowy terrain; it’s a solid design for surface control when taking on the outdoor topography. Nine metal spikes further enhance surface grip, especially on softer ground.

Salomon Spikecross 3 CS size and fit

The Salomon Spikecross 3 CS has a standard running shoe length. Its unisex design & the sizing scheme ensure a versatile fit for men and women. The available width is medium; it accommodates the runners who have medium sized feet. The semi-curved shape of this shoe mimics the natural curve of the human foot.

Outsole

Winter Contagrip is the outsole component used for the Salomon Spikecross 3 CS. It features a durable rubber compound that grips onto surfaces with sureness and ease. Aggressive gripping lugs act as hooks that cling onto the various terrains.

Nine metal spikes are added to specific areas of the outsole, right onto the gripping lugs. They are the ones that handle soft ground, thus preventing slippage.

Midsole

The main mid-sole unit of the Salomon Spikecross 3 CS features EVA or Ethylene vinyl acetate. This full-length foam carries the foot and protects it from impact forces, especially during the striking phase. It’s responsive and it doesn’t feel stiff.

The SCS or Salomon’s Cushioning System is placed in the heel and forefoot sections of the platform. It improves the underfoot cushioning while also returning energy to the runner.

Ortholite is the technology used for the sock liner of this running shoe. Aside from adding a bit more cushioning to the underfoot, it also delivers anti-microbial support, as well as moisture management.

Upper

The upper unit of the Salomon Spikecross 3 CS makes use of open mesh, a quick-drying fabric that is capable of accommodating airflow into the foot-chamber. Sweat and moisture won’t persist in the shoe because of this feature.

The ClimaShield™ is a breathable material that acts as a shield against snow and other wet conditions. Placed in the forefoot area, it serves as a barrier against splashes and snow exposure. It also helps in keeping the foot warm when running in cold weather.

Sensifit is a system that allows the upper to hug the middle of the foot with ease. It basically encompasses the foot in a snug and secure coverage.

Durable Kevlar fibers are used for the lacing system. This Quicklace feature makes tightening and loosening the fit more agreeable and user-friendly. There’s no more need for traditional lace-ups and looping.
