- The sole unit’s material was updated from Contagrip M&S (Mud & Snow) to the Premium Wet Contagrip. This compound works on wet rock, ice, as well as other types of terrain. It provides a sticky and reliable grip.
- Due to some reductions, primarily on the outsole lugs, the weight of this version is lighter than its predecessor. For the men’s shoe, it was reduced from 325 grams to 280 grams. The women’s version weighs 250 grams, 25 grams lesser than the older version.
- From a standard EVA, the midsole was switched to Salomon’s LT Muscle or Lightweight Muscle material. This cushioning ensures that runners receive enough underfoot comfort and protection from a robust trail running shoe.
The Salomon Speedcross Pro 2 is available in standard running shoe lengths. Despite this, there are retail websites that suggest purchasing the shoe in a size that’s smaller for a snug fit. As for the widths, D – Medium is available for men and B – Medium is available for women.
Just like in the popular Salomon Sense Ride 2, the outsole is Salomon’s Premium Wet Traction Contagrip. The compound runs the shoe’s full length. It provides a strong grab on different surfaces, including ones that are wet and icy as it has a bit of stickiness to it. The high-quality material also acts as a shield for the underfoot, protecting the runner from various sharp objects on the trail.
Instead of the usual compression EVA, Salomon decided to create the midsole with the process of injection. A specially formulated liquid EVA is injected into a mold and is left to form for some time. Once the EVA solidifies, the cast is opened, and the injection-molded unit pops out. This process produces a platform that is lighter and more responsive.
The LT Muscle is a technology that is meant to absorb impact forces during a runner’s striking phase. The energy the joints and the foot receive is more minimal thanks to this technology. The landing also becomes smoother.
Salomon added an extra layer of cushioning in the form of a molded sock liner. The primary purpose of this additional layer is to provide lasting comfort to the runner.
The upper is made up of a water-and-abrasion resistant textile. These characteristics work well to protect the foot during the running sessions. The textile keeps the water off and maintains its integrity as it can withstand any method of wearing down.
Around the base is a Mud Guard material which prevents mud and clay from clinging to the shoe. Since the protective base prevents grime from accumulating, runners can confidently run on muddy terrain without worrying about their foot becoming wet and mucky.
To further prevent mud, dirt and other particles from entering the shoe through the eyelets, the shoe has been equipped with a gusseted tongue. This type of tongue unit extends towards the holes of the lacing system to act as a shield against invasive debris.
Welded Sensifit overlays enhance the fit. The additions improve the snugness on the midfoot, minimally locking this part of the foot down. They carry their purpose without adding a lot to the weight of the shoe.
Another Salomon technology that hugs the foot and promotes the right level of snugness is the sock-like structure called Endofit. It has also been described as a sleeve that substantially improves midfoot wrapping and gives the foot that much-needed security and comfort during long runs.
As added protection for the toes, Salomon placed a toe cap on the Speedcross Pro 2. This thick covering protects the forefoot from stubbing on different objects on the trail.
The shoe is equipped with a quick-lace mechanism to allow easy adjustment of the fit. This type of lacing also aids in customizing the snugness around the midfoot.
The extra length of the laces is kept inside a lace pocket located at the top of the tongue. This feature prevents the laces from becoming cumbersome or causing the runner to trip.
