Ronnie Fieg x Dover Street Market x New Balance 574 Sport History
The silhouette that the Ronnie Fieg and Dover Street Market collab is based on is the New Balance 574 which was released by the brand in 1988 and reissued in 2003. It was originally an advanced running shoe that contained New Balance’s ENCAP technology which gave the shoe added stability and superior shock dispersion.
The 574 had a combined suede and mesh upper and a solid rubber outsole. It was a fan favorite, and the brand kept churning out colorways upon vibrant colorways for the model. The sneaker has also gone through numerous iterations and has become part of several collaborations, taking on new fabrics and colors every time.
In July of 2017, New Balance teamed up with designer and Kith founder Ronnie Fieg and retailer Dover Street Market for a new take on the 574 Sport. The collab gave three major updates to the classic. First, the tongue and collar area has been converted into a bootie-like construction. Second, the toebox area was made narrower and more streamlined to keep up with modern styling. And third and last, the midsole was upgraded to the Fresh Foam technology.
28 interchangeable velcro logos were added by Ronnie to add versatility to the silhouette. These are made of various colors as well as of different fabrics including nubuck, leather, and reflective. A custom packaging system released by Kith is designed to hold the patches prominently.
