Reebok Aztec Tonal History

Reebok once again unearthed one gem from their impressive library of athletic footwear. The Reebok Aztec Tonal was first released in 1979 as a training shoe. It featured a dual density midsole, a replaceable rubber carbon heel and speed lacing system.

The original Aztec was released in a bold colorway -Blue-Red-Yellow, which caught the attention of a large number of crowds. This shoe displayed a TPU D-ring lacing system with an assorted fabricated upper that further enhanced the luxurious look.

The rubber outsole has a design similar to the Men’s Shadow I, Women’s Shadow II and the Midas. Some buyers from the 70s era found this pair unusual because of the unique angular-cut from the rear sole up to the heel tab. But by looking closely, buyers and reviewers appreciated that this remarkable design provided an extra stable flat platform for the heel strikes.

Reebok launches an OG version of this classic silhouette in 2017. The package comes with a booklet about the stories behind the conception of the design and the old campaigns from the Reebok. In the same year, the brand releases the tonal version bearing the classic silhouette of the Aztec. It features a surprise edgy camo underlay for an added character while the gumsole plays up the retro vibe. And Reebok calls this the Aztec Tonal.
