Puma x Rihanna Suede Creeper History
The year 2015 was really a game changer for Puma with the entry of pop star Rihanna as the Puma global ambassador for Women’s Training and later on as creative director for Puma Women’s.
Rihanna’s influence on Puma Women’s design with her FENTY line has been evident in the improved sales of the brand, especially to its female clientele.
Among her first projects was innovating one of the company’s classics, the Puma Suede, by adding a thicker elevated gum sole but retaining the suede material and the Formstrip and cat logos on the sides and back of the heel. The Rihanna x Puma Suede Creeper was born that same year to much acclaim and clamor of thousands of women wanting a sneaker ready to make a fashion statement.
The music icon often called her most popular creation as the FENTY Creeper and has been the talk of the town ever since with some 3,000 pairs sold in the brand’s online website in an hour of its release while in the US some 3,500 pairs were sold in just 35 minutes. The brand’s website literally crashed due to the huge amount of interest for the music icon’s shoe design.
Even other celebrities took notice of the Creeper with the likes of Gigi Hadid, The Weeknd and Joan Smalls joining the bandwagon as endorsers and regular wearers of the shoe. Rihanna also unveiled her FENTY Creeper collection at the New York Fashion Week the following year also to critical acclaim.
With the sudden shift from athletic shoes to lifestyle shoes, Puma is certainly getting back on the right track to global shoe domination now that big music icons like Rihanna have stepped in and helped create hype and renew the interest of the younger generation to this pioneering German shoe brand.
