Puma Suede Classic x The Weeknd History
German footwear brand Puma has always been known for its classic shoes worn by many from one generation to the next. It shares several iconic shoes that, up to this day, manages to remain relevant in the sneaker community and still well-received even by younger generations.
One timeless silhouette that Puma created is the Puma Suede. It is a low-top basketball shoe turned lifestyle footwear that debuted in 1968. Being one of the most versatile sneakers and truly an icon, the Suede made a significant impact on the history of sneakers. In 1968 during the Mexico City Olympic Games, it made a historic appearance as worn by 200-m dash gold medalist and civil rights icon Tommie Smith and 200-m dash bronze medalist Josh Carlos. Then in the ‘90s, the shoe made its way into the hip-hop culture and was a popular choice in the breakdancing culture.
2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic Puma Suede. As part of the special celebration, the brand has been releasing several renditions of the Suede including collaborations with MAC Cosmetics, Hello Kitty, Poggy, Paul Stanley, Big Sean, Bobbito, X-Large, MCM, Ferrari, Santa Cruz, Stampd, Chapter II, Panini, Bradley Theodore, and The Weeknd.
Released on August 11, 2018, in three colorways, including Glacier Gray, Black/White, and Black/Gum, at $140 retail price is the Puma Suede Classic x The Weeknd shoe. This The Weeknd Suede exclusive gives a whole new look to the classic Suede silhouette by taking inspiration from military gear. It has a mid-top construction with functional buckle straps, 1968 design accent on the tongue representing the birth year of the iconic classic, and a speckled design midsole.
Puma Suede Classic x The Weeknd Style
The Puma Suede Classic x The Weeknd is a mix of street style, futuristic, and rugged design while maintaining the Suede’s classic heritage. The upper is dressed in premium suede with its signature Formstrips on the sides for that authentic Puma aesthetic, while added details exude Abel Tesfaye's (AKA The Weeknd) personal style. Military gears inspired these mid-top sneakers, with prominent buckles replacing laces and "19" and "68" design accent on the tongue.
Fit & Sizing
This The Weeknd-designed Suede shoe is a unisex model that comes in men’s sizing. Sizes range from 4 to 14 in D Medium width. For the ladies who wish to cop a pair, a 1.5 size down than your usual in women’s sizing is suggested for an accurate fit. For example, a size 9 in women’s would be approximately equivalent to a size 7.5 in men’s.
The Puma Suede Classic x The Weeknd features a mid-height boot silhouette, which provides sufficient ankle support and protection, accompanied by military-inspired buckle straps around the ankle and on the forefoot area for a lockdown and supportive fit. A loop/pull tab is placed on the heel for easy on and off wear.
The Puma x XO Suede Classic released as part of the Puma Suede’s 50th anniversary. As based on the original Suede, this The Weeknd rendition retains the signature features of the classic that made it as iconic as it is – the suede upper material, narrow tooling, and long and clean lines. However, The Weeknd took a whole, new spin and gave it a new look.
This shoe, unlike the original Suede, features a mid-height boot silhouette. The laces are removed and replaced by military-inspired buckle straps. The gum rubber sole also received a design upgrade in the form of speckled detailing. Its midfoot area/ tongue displays the numbers “19” and “68” on each shoe per pair as a nod to the Suede’s original release year.
