Fit & Sizing

Available in women’s sizes, the Puma Sky II Hi Explosive is offered in medium width, from sizes 5 up to 12. Its upper is made up of leather, delivering a firm fit for the foot. As a high-top shoe, excellent support for the ankle can be expected, especially as the collar has a Velcro strap closure along with some light padding. Laces tie up the front and can be adjusted for a comfortable fit.

Puma Sky II Hi Explosive Style

Attention-grabbing and fun-looking, the high-top Puma Sky II Hi Explosive is one shoe that is exciting to mix and match with. Its retro look will go well with skinny jeans and an oversized sweater or jacket, capturing the relaxed urban vibe of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Those decades were also known for their denim craze, so one can’t go wrong with a denim jacket or pants to pair with these kicks.

Legging, shorts, skirts or dresses are also a good option with these sneakers. Since the shoe already turns heads with its hybrid Velcro-and-lace design, it’s good to keep outfits muted to let these kicks speak for themselves. However, any funky look can easily be achieved with these high-tops using colorful patterns and designs elsewhere in one’s get-up.

Notable Features

With a polished patent leather and mesh upper, the Puma Sky II Hi Explosive features a smooth and striking appearance. It has a retro-inspired silhouette combined with the modern flair of two hook-and-loop Velcro closures on the ankle collar. The Puma name and Leaping Cat logo, along with the brand’s trademark Formstrip design, can be found on the side.

Other branding details include the Puma tag on the tongue, the Puma Sky label on the upper Velcro strap, and the Puma Cat logo on the heel counter. There’s some padding on the tongue and collar for comfort, while support is provided by the classic white midsole. Gold, silver, or blue accents can be seen depending on the colorway, providing a stylish contrast to the overall look. Stitch details complete the shoe’s vintage appeal.

Puma Sky II Hi Explosive History

Puma was founded out of the rivalry between two pioneering brothers, Rudolf and Adolf Dassler. They had created a lucrative shoe manufacturing company out of their mother’s small laundry in 1924, yet they could never seem to see eye to eye. So in 1948, Rudolf created Puma, while Adolf went on to establish Adidas.

Rudolf had initially tried to call his company Ruda, from his name Rudi Dassler, before going with Puma, another name for the wild cougar. He then transferred to the other side of their small hometown of Herzogenaurach, where Puma’s headquarters are still located today. Rudi’s innovative streak can be seen in the brand’s shoes, which are known for their prime athletic performance. The brand has also introduced Puma lifestyle shoes that are as eye-catching as they are functional.

One of these is the Sky II Hi sneaker, a high-top with a flamboyant design that was originally released in the 1980s. It was designed for use in the basketball court and featured a heavy-duty design, with Velcro straps on the collar and laces at the front. It offered excellent ankle support and a reinforced outsole and was quickly picked up by such teams as the Bolton Celtics and the L.A. Lakers.

With much demand in today’s market for retro sneakers, Puma brought the shoe back, keeping the original silhouette and design while updating the colorways and other details. One edition is the futuristic-looking Puma Sky II Hi Explosive. Its glossy patent leather upper alone promises a head-turning style for any season, making it a worthy addition to anyone’s quirky shoe collection.
