Ralph Sampson was a basketball legend in his own right. He was the first overall pick of the 1983 NBA Draft and became the Rookie of the Year in 1984. He towered over the rest of the NBA and took Puma Basketball to new heights.

After 30 long years, Puma is finally bringing back Ralph Sampson’s signature kicks in all its OG glory. Tailored for Sampson’s on-court needs, these basketball sneakers feature a mid-height construction and lightweight design for support, speed, and agility.

Cushion. The Puma Ralph Sampson Mid features a rubber midsole that offers both support and comfort on and off the court.

Traction. These retro basketball sneakers from Puma has a textured rubber outsole that provides increased traction and grip on any surface.

Length and Width. According to owners, these Puma basketball shoes fit perfectly.

Lockdown. The Ralph Sampson Mid features a full lace closure for a customized fit. The shoe’s mid-top collar is also equipped with ankle padding for heightened support and comfort.

These retro Puma basketball sneakers boast a leather upper with perforated details for support, durability, and breathability.

As a tribute to the Hall Of Famer, Puma asked Ralph Sampson to be part of the re-release of his signature sneaker.

“It is fun to see the evolution,” Sampson explains. “When I got the call they were back in it, and they wanted me to be a part of it, I was excited about the opportunities. I thought (the plan) was very impressive and something the shoe world needed. It is a perfect time for me and a perfect time for them. And the shoe has done well. It is a great story.”

The Puma Ralph Sampson Mid brings back 50 years of Puma Basketball history with its clean and classic look.

“I can’t tell you how important our archive is to us,” Puma Global Director of Brand and Marketing Adam Petrick says. “We have a history in the game. If we were coming out as a complete and total startup, the world would be a very challenging place for us. We have 70 years of sports history behind us and 50 years in basketball. The fact is we can look at our archive and tap that for stories and design cues. We are working on a product coming out in a month or so, and that shoe is taking quite a few of its design cues from the heritage look and feel from original basketball products. It has specific references to the Ralph Sampson products in the market today. Our designers are able to look at cues from the past, and it has a truth to it, a credibility and authenticity in the sport.”

Signature details include the PUMA Majesty branding on the midfoot and Ralph Sampson’s signature across the ankle.

Puma keeps showing Ralph Sampson some love with different colorways of his signature kicks. “I get the shoes all the time with different colors, different designs,” Sampson says. “It is fun to see when they come.”

His mother also gets in on the action. “She now opens them before I get to them,” says Sampson. “She wants to see the colors. She will dress up going to church wearing Ralph Sampson Puma shoes. It has been a fun family affair.”

Currently, only a few colorways of the Puma Ralph Sampson Mid are available.

  • Black/Red/White
  • Puma White/Grey Violet/Peacoat
  • White/Blue/Red
