Ralph Lauren Corporation was founded by Ralph Lauren in 1968. Lauren was a clothing salesman who got tired of selling other people’s products. He decided to establish his own clothing company. Since its inception, Ralph Lauren Corporation had sustained setbacks and successes. Today, the name Ralph Lauren has become one of the most recognizable clothing lines worldwide.

Lauren's first job was at Brooks Brothers as a salesman. Later, he decided to create his line of clothing and asked for Brooks Brothers' help. He was turned down by Brooks, even said that "the world was not ready" for him. Having no formal education in clothing design and running out of funds, Ralph Lauren and his brother Jerry sought the help of Norman Hilton and was given a loan amounting to $50,000.

The Polo Fashions Inc. was rapidly growing, with considerable deals coming from Bloomingdale and sizable orders of women's shirts, but business setbacks started to happen sooner than expected. By 1972, the company almost collapsed with numerous flops on financial planning and business decisions.
