Originally manufactured as a basketball shoe in 1969, the first model of the Adidas Superstar sported a low-top model. However, because of its gained popularity, it has been remodeled into different versions. Its distinct feature, a rubber shell toe, is deemed as iconic. Combined with a leather upper, it grabbed the attention of famous basketball player Kareem Abdul.

What placed the Superstar to a whole new level is when it crossed the hip-hop scene during the 1980s. Hip-hop band Run D.M.C. wore them on stage sans laces similar to how sneakers are worn in prison. It created such a statement and it followed a song “My Adidas” in 1986.
