Onitsuka Tiger Rotation 77 History
The present Rotation 77 drew its inspiration from the first volleyball focused shoe on the Onitsuka Tiger footwear line. It takes on the shape of Onitsuka's first attempt to create a volleyball shoe called the TIGER mark volleyball shoes which were released in 1952.
Three years after the release of the TIGER mark volleyball shoe a follow up was introduced which focuses on the attack and defensive aspect of the game. Each design is built specifically for its purpose with the Defensive A having diagonal lines on the outsole inside the arch for quick and abrupt movements.
It took years before the company revisited their volleyball franchise, but when they did, they made it to a whole new level. In 1964, they introduced the Rotation 6 volleyball shoes. These shoes were primarily designed for the six-a-side rotation rule which was imposed in 1958. It contains a heel sponge which allows quick jumps and absorbs shock at the same time to prolong player game time.
From then on, subsequent releases of volleyball shoes were presented to the public. Some of these include the Rotation DX which was a subtle update to the Rotation 6 and the Rotation 72 which utilizes vinyl mesh for its upper to increase breathability during gameplay. After three years, the merger between three companies took place to establish the ASICS Corporation.
