Onitsuka Tiger Mexico Mid Runner DX History
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico Mid Runner is based on the mid-top training shoe used by the Japanese national team, competing in the 1964 Olympics held in Tokyo. The original shoe was made for sports or events in the competition such as Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, and Pole Vaulting. It was not commercially available and hence never appeared in the brand’s catalog at that time. The model was rediscovered in the archives of the Asics Research and Development department that was based in Kobe. This finding led to the birth of what we now know as the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico Mid Runner.
One of the many interpretations of the shoe today is called the Onitsuka Mexico Mid Runner DX, which is basically the deluxe version of its predecessor. The shoe belongs to the brand’s Nippon Made collection, Onitsuka’s high-end line. Models that are a part of the collection utilize premium materials and are all handmade, from cutting to dyeing and stitching. It involves a labor-intensive process and showcases the height of Japanese artisanal quality.
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico Mid Runner DX is available in different versions including a model crafted from Kobe Beef leather and a collaborative one in partnership with designer Andrea Pompilio.
