Nike Shox Avenue History

Mechanical devices that can serve as cushioning and shock-absorbing technologies have long caught the fancy of shoe designers. Nike’s development team was intrigued by Harvard’s very unique track, which had a bouncy characteristic. Runners often have faster times and less heel impact while running on this track. This happened way back in 1984.

The first crude attempt, appropriately called the Shox Technology, used steel springs to get that evident responsiveness and hopefully lessen heel impact. While it was a really good success, it was far from what they truly wanted to achieve.

In the 90s, this steel spring was replaced by a more pliable material, with still enough durability and responsiveness. Nike also advocated the use of heel counters to stabilize and secure the heel.

The Nike Shox was officially unveiled in 2000 and was the culmination of years of research and development to improve speed and cushioning for runners. It was originally characterized by four highly responsive rubber columns that are placed directly below the heel, though there are more recent models that spread more than four columns out along the full length of the shoe.

From its running DNA, it is now more of a lifestyle shoe that still has its chops when used by runners. Dropped in early 2015, the Nike Shox Avenue is among the most recent releases that remain loyal to the original column orientation of the first Shox. For a more uniform feel, the rest of its footbed is generously padded with light materials. To complete the experience of comfort, the upper is constructed using breathable synthetic mesh and leather.

Nike Shox Avenue Style

The mesh upper of the Nike Shox Avenue has synthetic overlays that enhance not only support and durability but also aesthetic appeal. It features either a multiple color combination or a good old tonal colorway, depending on what complements the wearer’s personality and fashion sense best.

Fit & Sizing

The Nike Shox Avenue with a breathable mesh upper comes in standard width. The gentlemen can pick their best fit from sizes 6 to 14 while the women’s get theirs from sizes 5 to 11. Nike utilizes substantial overlays in this shoe for optimal hold and support for those who want to run in this shoe or for those who are always on the go.

Notable Features

Nike’s Shox Technology is the clear star in the Shox Avenue. It is a technology that took years to finally bring to top form. Looking at it, one can feel the significance and the history that eventually brought about one of the most enigmatic and highly functional cushioning and shock-absorbing technologies around.

Besides being a feature that is greatly relevant to performance, the technology is also a very catchy feature in the shoe. It brings a level of sophistication and futuristic appeal that is hard to come by. The Shox Technology allows Nike to blend performance and sophistication in this shoe.
