Patrons of the Nike Gato line rejoiced when the Swoosh decided to release a new model for the collection. The Nike React Gato was not simply a comeback though as the model pushed for innovation, especially for futsal. Nike’s Product Line Manager Joel Bagby shared that the creation of the pair was inspired by a trip to Rio. They’ve observed there’s a high drop out rate for scouted players that are used to playing soccer barefoot. This is due to the high learning curve from transitioning to wearing boots when in play. This is what the brand wanted to address.
To do this, Nike React Gato is equipped with three distinct technologies. Starting with the upper, durable Flyknit material is used. While it has been developed by the brand for durability, the knit-based element still brings a soft sensation for the wearer. To promote ball touch, a texturing applied to the area is apparent. For fit customization and stability, a traditional lacing system has been made part of the shoe’s construction.
Second is the shoe’s cushioning system. A full-length Nike React midsole is used. It is a well-loved material for running shoes, especially for the Nike Legend and Phantom Vision line. This foam-based element has been created to deliver a lightweight and responsive cushioning.
The outsole features the innovative Nike Touch 360. This shoe technology features flexible rubber pods that are situated underfoot to improve touch and tactile responsiveness. These pods allow more awareness for the ball as they extend slightly when manipulating the ball.
The Nike React Gato indoor shoe has a Flyknit upper that delivers a soft and comfortable feel for the wearer. The material also effectively wraps around the wearer’s foot. To reinforce the fit and promote foot lockdown and security, a traditional lacing system is also part of the pair’s design.
A Flyknit upper is used for the Nike React Gato soccer cleat. Incorporating a new proprietary yarn from the brand, the material delivers a soft sensation as it hugs the wearer’s foot. Developed with durability in mind, the knit upper has some small TPU zones which are able to stand constant abrasion. Reinforcing this is a toe cap that helps protect the shoe from abrasion. Lastly, texture is added to the area to promote ball control.
Initially used for running shoes, Nike React foam has been designed to cater to every runner’s dream - a responsive yet lightweight cushioning system. Branching out to futsal shoes, this foam element has been used for the Nike React Gato model.
The outsole features Nike Touch 360. A first for Nike shoes, the innovation makes use of flexible rubber pods placed under the sole. This setup delivers improved touch and responsiveness as the pods extend up slightly as you control the ball underfoot. This affords the player a heightened awareness of the ball.
The Nike React Gato is available in several colorways including:
- Racer Blue/ Deep Royal Blue. White/ Volt
- Black/ Total Orange/ Dark Smoke Grey/ White
- White/ Cool Grey/ Bright Crimson
Some would argue that Nike React Gato is the true predecessor of the Nike Lunar Gato II. Let’s take a close look at both these cleats’ constructions. Firstly, the cushioning system for the Lunar Gato is constructed from Lunarlon foam. The Nike React, as with the name, uses React foam. While both systems deliver lightweight and responsive cushioning, Nike React delivers much more energy return than the Lunarlon foam.
Additionally, the Nike React Gato makes use of a Flyknit upper while the Nike Lunar has a soft premium leather featuring mesh panels for breathability. While both materials deliver a good touch on the ball, the knit-based material is more form-fitting.
For the outsole, while both models make use of a rubber material. However, the Nike React Gato features the Nike Touch 360 technology. The rubber outsole of the Nike Lunar model has a multi-directional traction pattern.
- A turf variation has not been made available for this Nike model.
