Released in 1994 as Charles Barkley’s first Nike signature shoe, the Air Max2 CB ‘94 holds a special place in a lot of hoopers’ hearts because it was one of the first shoes to sport a bulky silhouette. Today, the shoe is retroed with a lower profile, making it fit for casual wear.
Cushion. The CB ‘94 Low uses full-length Polyurethane foam in its midsole; a visible Air Max unit is embedded at the foam’s heel. This cushioning setup is ideal for centers and heavier players as the Air unit provides lightweight impact protection.
Traction. The outsole has a tread pattern that is composed of multiple abstract shapes. It is made of solid rubber, making the shoe a good outdoor basketball sneaker.
Length and Width. The Air Max2 CB ’94 Low fits true to size but feels a little narrow due to the elastic bands on the midfoot. It is recommended to try on the shoe in your local shoe store before purchasing.
Lockdown. The shoe’s styling and lockdown are hinged on its special lacing system. Three thick elastic bands run across the midfoot to keep the fit snug and tight. Leather straps wrap the foot from the base, ensuring a secure wrap.
The low version opts out of the original’s use of an internal neoprene sock but retains the external synthetic upper. The upper’s material varies with each model: some feature leather, some suede, while others use synthetic materials. Perforations on the sides of the shoe’s upper add ventilation and breathability.
Contributing to the CB 94 Low’s lockdown are its iconic lace loops, made of synthetic coils; while the shoe’s Air Max2 cushioning involves a polyurethane pouch filled with high pressured gas on the heel.
Both in aesthetics and function, the Air Max2 CB ‘94 Low is inspired by Charles Barkley’s erratic style of play. Made to look like a straitjacket, leather straps run from the shoe’s midsole and ends at the coiled lace loops. The leather material used for the shoe’s upper adds a touch of old-school sneaker vibe, whereas the teeth-like detail on the midsole helps provide stability.
The "NIKE" callout is embossed on the leather strap at the lateral side of the shoe, while the Nike Air logo can be found on the shoe's heel cup and insole. A minimal Swoosh is imprinted on the lateral heel and outsole.
The low-top version of the CB ‘94 comes in three colorways – the Black and White colorway that features a black suede upper and white midsole with black detailing; the Triple White colorway that has a clean all-white upper and midsole; and finally, the Gym Red that comes with a vibrant red upper, metallic mesh underlay, and white midsole.
