Nike Air Max Guile History
Nike’s air cushioning technology was first introduced in 1979, but it wasn’t until eight years later that the Air Max I would be born. The Air Max I used this air cushioning technology but was worked to show it as well through the visible air in the midsole. This ground-breaking shoe was the design of a young architect named Tinker Hatfield, who would go on and design several other trailblazing shoes in the future. His inspiration came from the Centre Pompidou building in Paris, a skeletal structure where you can see everything inside from the outside.
The shoe was the topic of much debate inside the Nike headquarters—not many were convinced of the visible air idea—but when the Air Max I was finally released in 1987, it proved to be a huge success. The Air Mags featured in the cult movie, Back to the Future II, further attracted a following for the Air Max line.
The 1990s was a fruitful year for the Air Max. That decade saw the release of many Air Max models along with three iconic ones: the Air Max 90, Air Max 95 and Air Max 97, each with a very different look. The 90 was inspired by the minimalist trend at the time, the 95 by the human anatomy, and the 97 featured a streamlined, fluid design.
In the year 2000s, hip-hop stars were singing about the Air Max, making the shoe officially “street.” By 2013, the shoe gained another following, this time from the fashion world. Fashion designers and editors were spotted sporting Air Max on their feet, and some were collaborating with Nike on new Air Max iterations.
In November 2015, the Air Max 2016 was released. This 2017, to celebrate the Air Max 1’s 30th anniversary, Nike released a few OG colorways of the Air Max 1 as well as new colorways for other Air Max kicks such as the 97 and 95. They also launched the Air Max Guile along with the women’s exclusive, Air Max Fury.
The Air Max Guile is designed with a minimalist look, and the textured design on the upper takes inspiration from the original Air Max. The old-school, low profile design makes the shoe suitable for most occasions.
Nike Air Max Guile Style
Known as a casual trainer, the Nike Air Max Guile would look best paired with a simple T-shirt and rolled denim. A streamlined light-colored jacket would top off your look.
