Nike Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 SE History
Nike Sportswear is restoring some of its most iconic, timeless offerings with designs that blend with different lifestyles. Some runners are tweaked to get a new life in the form of classic to stylish sneakers. One product that ushered Nike to step up into the fashion sphere is the vintage Air Max 90.
The original AM 90 profile got revamped countless of ways, some even appeared like a utility and even dress shoes. The Nike Air Max 90 2.0 SE is among the many makeover products done to the classic model that on the first glance it almost appears like an entirely new profile by Nike.
Nike’s creative maven Tinker Hatfield created the Air Max initially as a men’s running shoe. It was born at the time when pop artists Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Vanilla Ice, and Milli Vanilli were topping the charts signaling the start of a new era, the 1990s.
This original model, a third iteration of the Nike Air Max series had the same trademark Air bladder in the midsole that was intended to provide cushioning and support to runners at that time. It was initially named Air Max III until it was re-branded as Air Max 90 when the shoe was re-released in 2000. What made it so distinct among its siblings is its Infrared feature, subtle Swoosh branding, and upper structure that enables different design approaches.
The test of the AM90’s versatility started in 2006 when Nike pulled this classic model and included it in the unveiling of the One Time Only pack. It coincided with the debut of the Air Max 360, a profile with a visible full-rotation Air bubble in the midsole. Nike tweaked its iconic shoes and fused their uppers with the sole of the Air Max 360 creating a limited edition hybrid pack.
The Air Max 90 Premium Ostrich was released later on in 2008, which brought a new flavor to the familiar profile. The upper received enhancements of premium Nubuck, suede, and mesh coupled with a supple black ostrich skin on the mudguard.
The original silhouette received more twists as the Air Max 90 gradually metamorphosed into a much-sought sneaker profile. Its upper is considered as a well-adored subject of material and color updates coupled with the several proprietary technological advancements such as the Nike Hyperfuse, Vac Tech, and Tape techniques.
These technologies stretched the design opportunities for the Air Max 90. It paved the way for the release of certain variations that almost changed the composition of the original model, retaining subtle classic hints.
For instance, the premium Nike Air Max 90 Woven for women, which belongs to the same family, is a sneaker constructed with an entirely leather cover and a distinctive woven mudguard that intertwines from the heel to the toe. It also features an embossed Vac-Tech made Swoosh and stitched accents and pliant leather sockliner.
The AM 90 profile is also transformed into an all-leather utility shoe where the upper was re-engineered for cold-weather using a zipped-up shell covering its lacing system. This men’s shoe aptly named the Air Max 90 Utility also had warm inner lining and neoprene sockliner.
Soon Nike came up with a version that almost seemed like a dress shoe called the Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 SE, combining a lot of technical modifications to make it lightweight and functional. This special edition, a successor of the Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 can almost pass as an evening shoe with the presence of the fused feature on the entire forefoot. The good news about its seamless, rubberized feature on the vamp is that it can also repel water. This version comes in a variety of masculine colors.
Nike Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 SE Style
The Nike Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 SE is specially created with a breathable mesh upper, and forefoot design that is suitable for street wear fashion anytime of the day. Its seemingly capped toe feature is reminiscent of an old Oxford-style leather shoe which makes this version looks like a men’s dress shoe in a sporty profile. The durable rubber that makes up the covering on the vamp is built to keep feet dry during light rain showers. As a descendant of the classic AM90, this special edition has a dual-density foam midsole with a distinct Air bladder unit in the heel. This sneaker adds a dashing look to a pair of trousers and chinos.
Fit & Sizing
The special edition Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 has a standard lacing system that does not constrict the foot in the toe area. Its heel, midfoot, and forefoot sections are in medium width that it generally runs true to size. This sneaker is available in men’s sizes ranging from 6 to 13 US.
The trademark element of the Nike Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 is its ultra-lightweight feature defined by the fuse technology in its upper and ultra-tooling technique in the sole. Nike carved out several sections in the outsole which made this shoe lighter than the OG. As an offspring of the AM 90, this shoe showcases the proprietary Air cushioning unit in the midsole which puts a vintage appeal to this sneaker.
