Nike Air Force 1 High 07 NBA History
The Nike Air Force 1 is one of the brand’s most iconic designs that made a notable impact that contributed to the brand’s success. Launched in 1982 and named after the President’s plane, the AF1 was the first basketball shoe to incorporate the Nike Air cushioning. Being a brand whose expertise lied on running shoes, these sneakers paved the way for Nike to explore on different realms like basketball.
Renowned shoe designer Bruce Kilgore took inspiration from the Nike Approach hiking boot. The construction of this shoe has a lower angle towards the Achilles to enhance support and flexibility. While most of the sneakers resorted to a herringbone-patterned outsole, Kilgore designed the outsole in a circular pattern as an ode to the pivot move that basketball players make on the court.
Upon the release, the brand signed six NBA players called the “Original Six” to wear the trainers on the court. It quickly gained popularity but discontinued as, during this time, the brand didn’t offer products too long. Because of the demand, Nike re-released the sneaker in 1986. Presently, there are about 2,000 versions of Air Force 1s. The shoe indeed graduated from being just a basketball sneaker to being an icon.
