Nike Air Flight Huarache Ultra N7 History
In the eyes of a layman, a water skiing footwear is just a shoe built for that specific sport. However, famous shoe designer Tinker Hatfield, known for his creativity and ingenious ideas, had something else in mind. Pleased with the comfortable feel the neoprene water ski shoes provided, he thought of adopting elements of its design to create a basketball shoe. Soon after, the Nike Air Flight Huarache was born.
The timeless hoop shoe was first seen as a runner made of Lycra and neoprene fabric in 1991. Distinguished for its lightweight and “Swoosh”-free construction, the shoe’s unique design caught the attention of many Nike enthusiasts.
One year after, the Nike Air Flight Huarache, which fans of the brand know and love, was launched. Players fed up with bulky, and heavy b-ball kicks were happy to see a lighter offering. Michigan Wolverine’s Fab Five were among those who were enthralled with this shoe’s never-before-seen features.
Since its debut in 1992, the Huarache has undergone numerous transformations. In April 2017, however, the shoe’s more pronounced evolution took place. Re-engineered to meet present-day consumers’ needs and demands, the Nike Air Flight Huarache received an Ultra treatment and had been given a modern look.
This upgraded version was called the Nike Air Flight Huarache Ultra. Despite being a new entry, this model was chosen to be included in the N7 collection. The collection supports the N7 fund, a Nike initiative organized in 2009 to help Native American and Aboriginal boys and girls experience leadership and teamwork through sports.
The special edition was dubbed as the Nike Air Flight Huarache Ultra N7. Released on June 21, 2017, it was dressed in white, black and varsity maize. The shoe’s colorway was reminiscent of the traditional Ojibwe thunderbird graphics. Aside from a change in color, an “N7” gold branding was added on the lateral side to finish off its look.
