Size and fit

The New Balance 999 is available in both men’s and women’s sizing. Many reviews note that the forefoot might be too roomy that it’s suggested to go down either half or a full size down, especially those whose feet structure is on the narrower side.

For wide-feet wearers who prefer a more snug fit, it is recommended to get half a size down. However, it is still best to check out NB's sizing guide.

Featuring a detachable inlay sole allows specific individuals to replace it with one’s orthotics for a more customized fit.

New Balance 999 Style

Before New Balance running-inspired shoes found its way into a sneaker aficionado’s collection, it was already on the feet of people whose preference has always been comfort. The term “dad shoes” in previous years took on a literal meaning as most dads and older guys were commonly wearing NBs as daily wear.

After gaining attention on the release of the NB 574, the Boston-based shoe company got back in the limelight when people noticed that then Apple CEO Steve Jobs minimal fashion statement included any pair from the New Balance 99x series.

  • Since the younger market is more adventurous when it comes to fashion experimentation, one can always put on a pair of the signature all-grey or the New Balance 999 Hyannis or Seal colorway from the NB x Concepts collaboration.
  • Whether it’s a dress, shorts, or denim pants, ladies can pretty much wear anything once they put on a pair of NB999 in triple white variation.

Notable Features

The NB 999 possesses an upper of mixed materials of mesh, suede, and nubuck leather. Additionally, ripstop nylon hugs the heel and makes up the tongue for that pop of color.

Embroidery details are: (1) the “999” on the lateral side of the heel and (2) the NB logo on the heel. Beneath the heel is an exposed section of the ABZORB cushioning system. Depending on the color scheme, most of the midsoles in the NB999 are either two-toned or three-toned.

New Balance 999 History

Following in the footsteps of the NB 998, the NB999 was released in 1996. Infused with all the cushioning systems of ENCAP, C-Cap, and ABZORB, New Balance added a metatarsal pad to cushion the forefoot. The 999 model was also the first featuring an exposed part of the ABZORB midsole beneath the heel.

The NB 999 quickly amassed a following for the simplicity of the design that offered utmost comfort. It inspired so many collaboration releases and is given a new make-up every now and then through different pack releases.
