New Balance 574 x Ricardo Seco History

New Balance was a giant in the running shoe category for decades, and several of their performance footwear have turned into classics that fans of the brand still enjoy to this day. One of this is the 574. The 574 is undoubtedly the New Balance’s most famous model amongst all its runners and lifestyle sneakers. First seen in 1988, the runner featured a vibrantly-colored design and a breathable mesh and suede upper. The design of the shoe was lifted from components of the 575 and 576 models that went before it.

The 574 was especially steeped in street culture and style. Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan and Mos Def were frequently seen rocking the kick. The shoe’s street cred and eye-catching aesthetic combined with its low price point have given the silhouette an enduring mass appeal. For this reason, the brand has frequently released new colorways for the model, and the sneaker has also been the subject of various collaborations.

In December of 2017, the 574 was once again the subject of a makeover courtesy of a collaboration between the brand and Mexican fashion designer Ricardo Seco. The New Balance 574 x Ricardo Seco highlighted the rich culture of his country by featuring prominent vibrantly-colored beads in prominent Mexican-themed patterns and Huichol-inspired art. The shoe released on the 9th of December at a price tag of $180.
