New Balance came into being in 1906 in Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded by British immigrant William J. Riley, who wanted to sell arch supports that improve the fit of shoes. These products had a three-point design inspired by a chicken’s foot, which Riley observed gave the animals excellent balance. This is how Riley came up with the name “New Balance.”

In 1927, Riley met and hired Arthur Hall as a company salesman. He became a business partner later, finding much success in selling arch supports to people who stood a lot during their workdays, such as firefighters and the police. In the 1930s, the brand began to manufacture athletic kicks. Following this landmark change of direction, the company started to develop a loyal following of athletes.

In 1956, the business passed to Hall's daughter, Eleanor, along with her husband Paul Kidd, who decided to buy the company. The company released the Trackster, illustrating an innovative streak with the shoe's first-of-its-kind rippled sole. College sports teams used the sneaker, and its popularity grew through word-of-mouth. Its release transformed New Balance into a reliable name in the world of running.

Despite the boom in sales, New Balance stood by its principle of not sponsoring an athlete or sports team. Instead, the brand wanted to be recognized purely for the quality of its kicks. By the 1960s, the company had shifted its focus on athletic shoes, letting go of its marketing strategy directed towards arch supports.

In the 1970s, running became a favorite activity, which went on from the 1980s and onward. As a result, the production of athletic and running kicks became a multi-million-dollar industry, which New Balance benefited from.

In 1988, the brand once again released a landmark shoe, the New Balance 574. It was a hybrid of the 575 and 576 models, lifting the best from both to create a modern running-inspired sneaker. Since then, the 574 has been hailed as one of the brand’s most iconic silhouettes. It has also been re-released in different versions to offer updated designs. One such edition is the New Balance 574 Backpack.

This shoe celebrates the enduring stylish appeal and high-quality materials of the 574. The New Balance Backpack 574 offers the brand’s signature ENCAP technology for an ultra-cushioned midsole. Along with lightweight support, this sneaker comes in retro-inspired colorways reminiscent of the colorful fashion trends of the 1980s and 1990s.

  • This shoe features ENCAP midsole technology that offers premium support and maximum durability.
  • The EVA foam midsole and heel delivers a well-cushioned feel.
  • Its rubber outsole ensures a durable and supportive ride.
  • The tongue and collar are well-padded for additional comfort.
